Spain Visa Application Experience in the UK
I recently successfully obtained a Spanish visa while in the UK and want to share the entire application process with everyone. As an international student in the UK, applying for a Schengen visa is indeed more convenient than doing it back home, but there are still many details that require attention.
Document Preparation Checklist
Preparing documents is the most crucial step, as missing any item could lead to rejection. Essential core documents include original passport and copies, UK visa page copies, application form, photos, insurance policy, flight booking confirmation, hotel reservations, and bank statements. It’s particularly important to note that bank statements must show the last three months of records, with a recommended balance of over £1,000.

Appointment and Submission Process
Spanish visa centers operate in London, Manchester, and Edinburgh. I chose the London visa center, located near Marble Arch with convenient transportation access. The appointment system is relatively straightforward, but I recommend booking at least two weeks in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. On submission day, punctual arrival is essential as being late may require rescheduling.
| Visa Type | Processing Time | Fee |
| Short-term Tourist Visa | 15 working days | £75 |
| Multiple Entry Visa | 15-30 working days | £75 |
| Express Service | 3 working days | £150 |
Fee Details and Payment Methods
The visa fee is £75, with options for standard processing or express service. While express service costs more, it’s worthwhile if time is tight. The visa center also offers additional services like SMS notifications and passport delivery. Payment methods include cash, debit cards, and credit cards, though bringing cash is advisable in case of card machine issues.
Practical Tips and Important Considerations
I encountered some minor issues during the application process that I’d like to share to help others avoid pitfalls. First, photo requirements are extremely strict - they must be color photos with white background, sized 35×45mm. Second, don’t believe online claims that travel insurance can substitute for Schengen insurance - you must purchase dedicated Schengen travel insurance. Finally, if you’re a student, remember to bring proof of enrollment and your student ID.
The entire application process took about two weeks, and I ultimately received a one-year multiple-entry visa. While the process can be somewhat tedious, with proper document preparation, the approval rate is quite high. I hope this experience helps friends who are preparing to apply!
