As a resident who has been living in Spain for many years, I recently successfully obtained a UK visa and would like to share my experience throughout the entire application process. I hope this can help friends who are preparing to apply for UK visas.
Visa Type Selection and Basic Requirements
First, you need to determine which type of UK visa to apply for. For residents like us in Spain, the most common is the Standard Visitor Visa, suitable for tourism, visiting family, or short-term business activities. This type of visa typically has a validity period of 6 months, allowing stays in the UK for up to 6 months.
Applying for a UK visa requires meeting several basic conditions: holding a valid passport, having sufficient funds to support travel, having a clear purpose for the visit, and being able to prove you will leave the UK on time. It’s particularly important to note that even with a Spanish residence card, Chinese passport holders still need to apply for a UK visa.
Essential Document Checklist
Preparing documents is the most important part of the entire application process. Here’s the checklist of materials I prepared:
| Document Type | Specific Requirements |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months, with at least one blank page |
| Photos | Recent color passport photos, 45mm x 35mm |
| Financial Proof | Bank statements, deposit certificates |
| Accommodation Proof | Hotel reservations or invitation letters |
| Travel Itinerary | Detailed travel plans and round-trip flight bookings |
| Residence Proof | Copy of Spanish residence card and NIE certificate |

Detailed Online Application Process
UK visas must be applied for online through the official website. The entire process takes approximately 30-45 minutes to complete. First, visit the gov.uk official website, select “Apply for a UK visa,” then fill in personal information, travel purpose, financial status, etc., according to the prompts.
Be particularly careful when filling out the application form, as any errors could lead to visa rejection. I recommend preparing all information in advance, including travel records and work history from the past 10 years. After completing the online application, the system will generate an application number - make sure to save this number.
Scheduling Document Submission
After completing the online application, you need to schedule an appointment at a visa application center to submit your documents. In Spain, the main visa application centers are located in Madrid and Barcelona. I chose the Madrid center, located at Calle de Génova 20.
When booking, you can choose between standard service or priority service. Standard service processing time is usually 15 working days, while priority service can reduce this to 5 working days. Although priority service costs more, it’s worth it if time is urgent.
On the day of document submission, remember to arrive 15 minutes early and bring all original documents and copies. Staff will check the completeness of materials and then collect biometric information. The entire process takes about 30 minutes.
Finally, I’d like to remind everyone that applying for a UK visa does require patience and attention to detail, but as long as materials are well-prepared and requirements are followed, the success rate is quite high. Feel free to leave comments below with any questions - I’ll do my best to help everyone.
