I recently completed my French visa renewal while in Spain and want to share the entire experience with everyone. As a Chinese resident living long-term in Spain with Spanish visa exemption for French visa, sometimes we need to travel to France for various matters, but when the existing French visa is about to expire, renewal within Spain becomes necessary.
Basic Renewal Requirements
First, it’s important to understand that renewing a French visa in Spain requires meeting certain conditions. You must hold a valid Spanish residence permit, and the permit’s validity period must cover your planned stay in France. Additionally, your passport must have sufficient validity - I recommend at least 6 months remaining.

Required Documents Checklist
Document preparation is the most crucial step. I’ve compiled a detailed Schengen visa selection guide checklist:
| Document Type | Specific Requirements |
| Original Passport | Valid for 6+ months, at least 2 blank pages |
| Spanish Residence Permit | Original and photocopy |
| Application Form | Complete online, print and sign |
| Photographs | 2 recent passport photos, white background, color |
| Insurance Certificate | Schengen area coverage, minimum 30,000 euros |
| Bank Statements | Last 3 months, sufficient balance |
Special Reminder: All documents not in Spanish or French require official translation and certification, which may require additional time and costs.
Processing Procedure and Timeline
The renewal process is relatively straightforward but requires advance planning. First, book an appointment on the French consulate’s official website to submit documents - typically requires 1-2 weeks advance booking. Arrive punctually on submission day as staff will verify all document completeness.
Processing time is generally 10-15 working days, but during peak tourist season it may extend to 20 working days. I recommend starting preparations at least one month in advance to avoid travel disruptions due to visa delays.
Fees and Important Notes
Renewal fee is 80 euros, cash payment only. Besides the visa fee, consider translation and certification costs - approximately 20-30 euros per document. If expedited processing is needed, additional fee is 35 euros, though express service isn’t always available.
Personal Recommendation: Before submitting documents, call the consulate to confirm latest requirements as policies may change. Also, keep all receipts and confirmation letters for future reference. While the entire process can be somewhat tedious, with proper document preparation, the approval rate is quite high.
