Recently planned a trip to Spain and had a smooth experience applying for a Spanish visa in Melbourne. I’d like to share my experience with everyone. As an Australian permanent resident or citizen, applying for a Spanish visa is relatively straightforward, though there are some important points to note.
Visa Type Selection
First, you need to determine which type of visa to apply for. If you’re planning short-term tourism, applying for a Schengen tourist visa will suffice, typically valid for stays not exceeding 90 days within a 90-day period. This is what I applied for, costing 80 euros, approximately 130 Australian dollars. Note that Spanish visas are Schengen visas, allowing free movement within the Schengen area once obtained.

Essential Document Checklist
Document preparation is the most crucial step - every item is mandatory. Based on my experience, the following documents are required:
| Document Name | Specific Requirements | Notes |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months | Photocopy required |
| Photos | 3.5×4.5cm white background color photos (2 pieces) | Taken within 6 months |
| Application Form | Fill online and print | Signature required |
| Flight Reservation | Round-trip tickets | Payment not required |
| Accommodation Proof | Hotel booking confirmation | Cancellable bookings acceptable |
| Insurance | Medical insurance minimum 30,000 euros | Must cover Schengen area |
Special reminder: Bank statements must cover the last 3 months, with a recommended balance of at least 5,000 Australian dollars.
Application Process Explained
In Melbourne, Spanish visa applications must be submitted through VFS Global. The entire process works like this: first book an appointment online, then prepare all documents, attend your appointment at the VFS Global center to submit your application and provide biometrics, and finally wait for results.
My advice is to book appointments 2-3 weeks in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. The VFS Global office is located on Collins Street with convenient transportation. On submission day, remember to bring all original documents and photocopies - staff will verify them on-site.
Timeline Recommendations
Processing time is typically 15 working days, but I recommend applying at least one month in advance. I applied in March and received my visa in 12 working days, though I’ve heard summer peak season may take longer. If urgent, you can choose express service for an additional fee, reducing processing time to 5-7 working days.
Previously heard it was difficult to apply, but actually, with complete documentation, Australian residents have a high approval rate for Spanish visas. The key is honest completion of all information without any false content. After receiving your visa, remember to verify all information is correct, especially name spelling and validity period.
