Recently, while preparing materials for a spouse visa, I discovered that many friends are still unclear about the processing workflow for Spanish visa marriage certificates. As someone who has been through this process, I want to share my experience with everyone, hoping it can help friends who are currently preparing.
Basic Requirements for Marriage Certificate Authentication
First, it’s important to clarify that if your marriage certificate was obtained in China and you want to use it in Spain, it must go through an authentication procedure. Spanish authorities recognize two types of authentication: Hague apostille and consular authentication. Since China has joined the Hague Convention, in most cases you can now choose the more convenient Hague apostille.

Hague apostille has a simpler process compared to consular authentication and takes less time. It usually requires authentication by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs first, then you can obtain the Hague apostille label. The entire process typically takes 15-20 working days.
Required Materials Checklist
When preparing materials, you must be careful - missing any item could result in your application being returned. Based on my experience, here is the complete materials checklist:
| Material Type | Specific Requirements |
| Original Marriage Certificate | Must be an official certificate issued by the Civil Affairs Bureau |
| Marriage Certificate Copy | Clear and complete color photocopy required |
| Translation | Must be completed by an officially recognized translation agency |
| Application Form | Complete filling and confirmed signature |
| Identity Proof | Valid identity documents such as passport copies |
I especially want to remind everyone that translations must be in Spanish, and the translation agency must have appropriate qualifications. Don’t try to save money by using unofficial translators, as this could very likely result in rejection.
Detailed Authentication Process
The entire authentication process can be divided into several steps. First, you need to go to a notary office to notarize the marriage certificate, then to the provincial foreign affairs office for authentication, and finally to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Consular Department or its authorized agencies to complete the final authentication.
Each step has fixed processing times, so I recommend planning your schedule in advance. Notary offices can usually complete the process on the same day, provincial foreign affairs offices need 3-5 working days, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication requires 7-10 working days.
If you choose Hague apostille, after completing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, you’ll need an additional Hague apostille procedure, which typically takes 5-7 working days.
Budget Reference for Fees
The costs for the entire authentication process mainly include notarization fees, authentication fees, translation fees, etc. According to current fee standards, notarization costs approximately 200-300 yuan, total authentication fees at various levels are about 400-600 yuan, and professional translation fees are calculated per page, usually 150-200 yuan per page.
Previously, consular authentication fees were higher, but now choosing Hague apostille is relatively economical. A reasonable total budget would be around 1,500-2,000 yuan.
It’s important to note that if there are problems with materials requiring reprocessing, additional costs will be incurred. Therefore, for marriage certificate notarization, ensure all materials meet requirements the first time to avoid repeated trips.
