Complete Guide to Nordic Travel with Spanish Visa
I recently completed a Nordic four-country journey departing from Spain and want to share this experience with everyone. Traveling to Nordic countries with a Spanish Schengen visa is really convenient, and with proper itinerary planning, you can save considerable money and time.
Visa and Entry Requirements
First, it’s important to clarify that Spain, as a Schengen Area member state, allows holders of valid Spanish Schengen visas to freely travel to Nordic countries including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. Note that although Norway is not an EU member, it belongs to the Schengen Area, so there are no issues whatsoever. I recommend checking your visa validity period before departure to ensure it covers the entire travel period.

Transportation Route Planning
Departing from Madrid, I chose a combination of flights and trains. The specific route was Madrid-Copenhagen-Stockholm-Oslo-Helsinki-Madrid. This circular design maximizes time efficiency and avoids backtracking.
| Route/Segment | Transportation | Approximate Cost | Duration |
| Madrid-Copenhagen | Direct flight | 150-250€ | 3 hours |
| Copenhagen-Stockholm | Train | 80-120€ | 5 hours |
| Stockholm-Oslo | Train | 60-90€ | 6 hours |
| Oslo-Helsinki | Ferry | 200-300€ | 16 hours |
| Helsinki-Madrid | Direct flight | 180-280€ | 4 hours |
Accommodation and Budget Control
Accommodation costs in Nordic countries are indeed high, but with reasonable planning through visa application strategies, you can still control your budget. I mainly chose youth hostels and budget hotels, averaging 40-80 euros per night. I particularly recommend Generator Hostel in Copenhagen and HTL Kungsgatan in Stockholm, both offering excellent value and convenient locations.
In Oslo, I stayed two nights in an Airbnb, experiencing local life while being able to cook my own meals, which is especially practical in expensive Norway. In Helsinki, I chose a chain hotel in the city center, though more expensive, the convenient transportation made it worthwhile for the final day without rushing.
Practical Tips and Important Notes
Regarding currency, except for Norway using Norwegian Kroner, the other three countries use the Euro, which is very convenient. However, cash usage is very low, almost everywhere accepts credit card payments, so I recommend getting an international credit card without foreign transaction fees.
Weather requires special attention - even in summer, Nordic temperature variations are significant, so bring windproof jackets and rain gear. When I visited in June, daytime temperatures were comfortable at over 20°C, but evenings could drop to around 10°C. Additionally, Nordic summer daylight hours are very long, so prepare for light protection - hotel curtains are usually thick for this reason.
Throughout the entire journey, my biggest impression was that Nordic natural scenery and cultural environment are fantastic. Although living costs are high, the experience is worthwhile. Traveling to Nordic countries with a Spanish visa is really convenient, saving much visa procedure hassle. I highly recommend everyone to experience it when possible.
