Recently discovered the Protos brand at a professional wine shop in Madrid. As a high-quality Spanish domestic red wine, it’s definitely worth sharing my tasting experience with everyone.
Protos Brand Background
Protos winery is located in the Ribera del Duero region of Castilla y León, one of Spain’s most renowned wine regions. Founded in 1927, this winery has nearly a century of history and primarily cultivates the local premium grape variety Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto Fino.

Flavor Profile Analysis
After multiple tastings, Protos red wine left a deep impression on me. The wine has a full and rich body, with distinct black fruit aromas like black cherry and blackberry. Upon tasting, you can feel moderate tannin structure, balanced acidity, and a persistent finish. Different vintages of Protos vary in oak barrel aging time, creating different layers of tasting experience.
| Wine Type | Aging Time | Price Range | Serving Temperature |
| Protos Joven | 6 months | 15-20€ | 16-18°C |
| Protos Crianza | 12 months | 25-35€ | 17-19°C |
| Protos Reserva | 24 months | 40-55€ | 18-20°C |
I personally recommend the Crianza series, which offers excellent value for money, maintaining the fruit aromas of young wines while possessing certain complexity. You can find it at local supermarkets like El Corte Inglés at reasonable prices.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Based on actual pairing experience, Protos red wine pairs exceptionally well with traditional Spanish dishes. It works great with roasted lamb, Iberian ham, or Manchego cheese. Especially when enjoying Cochinillo Asado, this wine’s tannin structure beautifully balances the richness of the meat.
For daily consumption, I recommend decanting Protos red wine 1-2 hours before serving to allow the wine to breathe and better release its aromas. For storage, keep away from light at temperatures between 12-15°C for optimal conditions.
