Having lived in Spain for over 3 years as a food enthusiast, wine and olive oil have become two essential items in my daily life. Today I want to share some local brands I’ve personally tried, hoping to help friends planning to visit Spain or purchase Spanish specialties online.
Wine Brand Recommendations
When it comes to Spanish wine, many people immediately think of the Rioja region, but there are actually many other excellent choices. Marqués de Cáceres is one of my personal favorites, priced between 8-15 euros with exceptional value for money. Additionally, Viña Albali is a common affordable choice in supermarkets, perfect for everyday table wine. If you want something slightly more upscale, Campo Viejo’s Reserva series is really excellent, around 20 euros for quite good quality wine.

For friends just starting to explore Spanish wines, I recommend beginning with the Tempranillo grape variety, which is Spain’s most representative grape with a relatively mild and approachable taste. My purchasing advice is to go to large supermarkets like Carrefour or El Corte Inglés, where there are more choices and prices are relatively transparent.
Olive Oil Selection Guide
Spain is the world’s largest olive oil producer, with so many brands it can be overwhelming. After years of testing, I’ve summarized several brands worth recommending. Carbonell is probably the most well-known mass-market brand, available in all major supermarkets with moderate prices and stable quality. If you’re pursuing higher quality, although it’s more expensive Hojiblanca’s extra virgin olive oil is really worth the investment, with rich and layered flavors.
| Brand Name | Price Range | Features |
| Carbonell | 3-6 euros | Mass-market brand, great value |
| Hojiblanca | 8-15 euros | Premium quality, rich flavor |
| Borges | 4-8 euros | Mid-range price, stable quality |
When buying olive oil, always look for “Aceite de Oliva Virgen Extra” on the label, which indicates extra virgin olive oil of the highest quality. Another tip is to choose dark glass bottles, as light protection is very important for olive oil quality.
Practical Purchasing Tips
Regarding purchasing channels, I suggest beginners first try different brands at physical supermarkets to find flavors they like before considering online shopping. Spain’s Mercadona supermarket, while a budget chain, actually has very good quality own-brand olive oil at affordable prices. For wine, if you want more professional selections for Spanish wine and olive oil, you can visit specialized vinotecas where staff are usually very knowledgeable and can offer good advice.
Finally, a reminder that storage conditions are very important for both wine and olive oil. Wine should be kept in dark, cool places, and olive oil should be sealed and kept away from light. This is especially important during Spain’s hot summers.
