Just saw the Spanish Wine Association release their 2024 wine expert directory, and as a wine enthusiast who has lived in Spain for many years, I find this list extremely valuable for wine selection reference, so I’m sharing it with everyone.
This published expert directory is mainly divided into three categories: internationally renowned wine critics, senior sommeliers and winery technical experts. Most notably, José Peñín stands out as one of Spain’s most authoritative wine critics, having been involved in wine evaluation for over 30 years. There’s also Luis Gutiérrez, who as Spanish wine regions specialist for Wine Advocate magazine, has tremendous market influence with his ratings.

Authoritative Expert Category Rankings
From a professional perspective, these experts each have their strengths. In the sommelier category, Ferran Centelles ranks first with his extensive experience at elBulli restaurant, particularly excelling in food and wine pairing. Among winery technical experts, María José López de Heredia from Rioja and Álvaro Palacios from Priorat both made the list - they are not only excellent winemakers but also important promoters of wine education.
| Expert Name | Professional Field | Main Region | Years of Experience |
| José Peñín | Wine Critic | All Spain | 30+ years |
| Luis Gutiérrez | International Critic | Rioja/Duero | 15+ years |
| Ferran Centelles | Sommelier | Catalonia | 20+ years |
| María José López | Winemaking Tech | Rioja | 25+ years |
Worth noting is that this year’s list shows a significant increase in the proportion of female experts, reflecting positive changes in Spain’s wine industry. Young female wine critics like Almudena Alberca and Belén Parra are bringing new perspectives and vitality to the industry. Their evaluation style is more nuanced, with particular attention to wine elegance and balance.
For us ordinary consumers, paying attention to these experts’ recommendations is indeed valuable. However, I personally suggest not relying completely on scores, it’s better to combine them with your own taste preferences. After all, everyone’s palate is different, and wines recommended by experts may not suit everyone. When buying wine, you can refer to these experts’ opinions, but also be bold enough to try works from boutique wineries - you might have pleasant surprises! Understanding Spanish wine classifications can also help guide your selections.
