Recently, during a visit to a winery in Madrid, I unexpectedly discovered Carlos Serres wine. As someone quite interested in Spanish local wines, I decided to buy a few bottles to taste them carefully at home.
Carlos Serres Winery Background
Carlos Serres winery is located in the town of Haro in the Rioja Alta region, established in 1896. This winery has over 125 years of winemaking history and is considered one of the more renowned traditional wineries in the area. They primarily produce red wines from Tempranillo grape varieties, along with some blended products.

Tasting Experience Share
I purchased their Crianza level red wine, 2019 vintage. Upon opening, there are distinct aromas of cherry and vanilla, with some oak barrel notes. The palate shows moderate acidity with gentle tannins, without that overly heavy sensation. Overall, it’s quite approachable and doesn’t feel too astringent or heavy.
The alcohol content is 13.5%, which is standard for Rioja region red wines. For food pairing, I think it goes well with grilled meats, cheese, or traditional Spanish ham. Price-wise, it’s around 12-15 euros, offering decent value for money among Rioja wines of the same level.

Purchase Recommendations
If you’re just starting to explore Spanish wines, Carlos Serres Crianza is indeed a good choice. It doesn’t have the complexity of premium wines, but it won’t overwhelm beginners either. For regular wine drinkers, the complexity might feel somewhat simple.
I suggest trying one bottle first, and if you enjoy the Carlos wine pricing, then consider purchasing their Reserva or Gran Reserva levels. These higher-tier wines offer greater complexity and aging potential.
