Recently I discovered a very interesting Rioja commemorative red wine at a boutique winery in Madrid - a limited edition 2019 vintage specially released to celebrate the winery’s 150th anniversary. As a wine enthusiast who has lived in Spain for many years, I couldn’t help but share this tasting experience with everyone.
This commemorative edition wine uses the finest Tempranillo grapes from the Rioja region, blended with small amounts of Garnacha and Mazuelo. The winery specially extended the oak aging time during production, increasing from the traditional 12 months to 18 months, using a combination of French and American oak barrels. The label design is also very thoughtful, featuring the founder’s handwritten font with gold embossing technique, making the overall packaging quite exquisite.

Detailed Tasting Notes
After opening, I let it breathe for 30 minutes. The wine shows a deep ruby red color with excellent clarity. The aroma is complex and layered - initially offering black cherry and blackcurrant fruit notes, followed by vanilla, toasted spices, and a hint of leather. On the palate, the tannin structure is balanced with moderate acidity, perfectly integrating fruit flavors with the toasted notes from oak aging. The finish is long, lasting approximately 25-30 seconds.
Regarding price, this commemorative edition is priced between 45-50 euros, which is indeed more expensive than regular vintage wines from the same region. However, considering the limited release and special winemaking process, I personally think the value proposition is acceptable. I was initially worried it might be overly commercialized, but after actually tasting it, I found the quality has indeed improved.

If you’re interested in this type of commemorative wine, I suggest following anniversary events from major wineries, as they usually release special editions. However, note that commemorative editions have limited production. If you like it, I recommend acting quickly. This time I almost missed out on this commemorative wine and nearly couldn’t find the Spanish commemorative wine bottle. For friends in Spain who want specific purchasing information, feel free to message me privately and I’ll share the winery’s contact details.
