Overview of Madrid Train Stations
As the capital of Spain, Madrid is a crucial hub in the national railway network. The city has two primary train stations: Atocha and Chamartín, both connecting domestic and international routes. In addition to these, smaller suburban stations cater to local travel needs.

Atocha Station
Atocha is located on the southern side of the city center and serves as the main departure point for southern and eastern lines. The Madrid train station blends classical and modern architectural elements, with its indoor tropical garden being a standout feature—perfect for a stroll while waiting for your train. Atocha is also the central hub for high-speed rail, with trains to destinations such as Barcelona, Seville, and Valencia mostly departing from here.
| Train Type | Example Destinations |
| AVE High-Speed Train | Barcelona, Seville, Valencia |
| Medium-Distance Train | Toledo, Cuenca |
| Cercanías Commuter Rail | Multiple stops within city and suburbs |
Chamartín Station
Chamartín is situated in the north of Madrid and is more convenient for travelers heading to the northwest, north, and certain international destinations. Compared to Atocha, it tends to be less crowded and more tranquil. This station offers direct long-distance trains to Paris and Lisbon, as well as routes connecting to Spain’s northern coast, such as Santander and Bilbao.
Travel Tips
- Purchase tickets in advance via the Renfe website or app, especially during holiday peak periods when services sell out quickly.
- Pay attention to the ticket gate locations, as waiting areas for different train types may be far apart.
- While signage within Atocha station is relatively clear, during busy times it’s wise to allow extra time to find your boarding area.
Transport Connections
A direct Cercanías commuter rail connects both stations in about 15 minutes, or you can transfer via the metro. Almost all major city attractions can be easily reached by metro or bus from the train stations.
Whether you’re heading south or north, Madrid’s two major train stations meet all travel needs. Which station you choose depends mainly on your destination and train type. The city’s railway network is not only convenient but also makes traveling full of possibilities.
