I’ve been following Atleti’s matches lately, and I feel this season’s squad has quite a lot to offer. As a traditional powerhouse in La Liga, Atlético Madrid continues to maintain competitiveness in the 2024-25 season. Today, I’d like to share the current squad list and some personal insights.
Goalkeeper Position
In goal, Jan Oblak remains the undisputed starter. This Slovenian goalkeeper has been serving the team for many years with unquestionable stability. Backup goalkeepers include Grbić and Gómez, who, although they don’t get many opportunities to play, perform professionally in training. Oblak’s presence gives Atleti’s defense more confidence, as his save success rate has consistently ranked among the top in La Liga.

Defensive Line Lineup
In the backline, veterans like Giménez, Savić, and Hermoso continue to hold the fort, while new signing Witsel is gradually integrating into the team. At fullback positions, players like Molina, Lindelöf, and Carrasco rotate, providing considerable defensive depth. This season, Simeone continues to employ his signature counter-attacking tactics, where defenders are tasked not only with defending but also with initiating attacks.
| Position | Starting Players | Backup Players |
| Center-back | Giménez, Savić | Hermoso, Witsel |
| Right-back | Molina | Nahuel |
| Left-back | Lindelöf | Carrasco |
Midfield Core
The midfield is Atleti’s brain, with Koke, Saúl, De Paul, Lemar and others forming a powerful midfield configuration. Koke, as captain, brings rich experience and excellent organizational skills. De Paul covers a large area with his running and shows high defensive activity, making him an indispensable part of Simeone’s tactical system. Young player Barrios is also gradually getting more opportunities, and his breakthrough ability brings new vitality to the team, as seen when Atlético Madrid faces Barcelona.
Attacking Force
In the forward line, Suárez has already left the club, and currently for Atlético Madrid, Morata and Griezmann are the absolute starters. Griezmann has maintained good form since his return, with his positioning and passing still at world-class level. Morata’s physical strength is excellent, and his positioning sense for scoring is sharp—the partnership between the two works ideally. On the bench, there are also Correa, Memphis and others, providing diverse attacking options.
Atlético Madrid’s squad configuration this season is quite balanced, with veterans bringing rich experience while newcomers continue to grow. Although there weren’t any major signings in the transfer market, Simeone’s coaching ability can maximize the potential of existing players. What do you think Atleti’s final position will be in La Liga this season? Feel free to leave your comments.
