When I first arrived in Madrid, I was quite unfamiliar with airport transportation. Today I’m organizing information about airport bus fares, hoping it will help friends who are planning to come to Madrid or have just arrived.
Current Fare Information
The single journey fare for the Express bus at Madrid Barajas Airport is currently 5 euros, which is the price adjusted in 2024. It was free for quite a long time before, but now charges have been reinstated. However, compared to taxi fares of 30-40 euros, the bus is still the most economical choice.

Ticket Purchase Methods Comparison
I’ve tried several ticket purchasing methods and compiled a simple comparison table:
| Purchase Method | Price | Convenience | Notes |
| On-board purchase | 5€ | Medium | Card or cash accepted |
| EMT official website | 5€ | High | Advance purchase required |
| Mobile APP | 5€ | Highest | Most convenient and fast |
| 10-trip ticket | 12.20€ | Low | Metro only, not valid |
Special reminder: The metro 10-trip ticket cannot be used for the airport bus, please note this.
Operating Hours and Frequency
The Express bus operates 24 hours, which is really convenient. During the day, there’s a bus approximately every 15-20 minutes, with fewer services at night, about every 35 minutes. There are stops at T1, T2, and T4 terminals, with the final destination being Atocha train station, passing through O’Donnell and Cibeles square along the way.
The entire journey takes about 40 minutes, though it depends on traffic conditions and may take longer during Madrid prices peak hours. Personally, I think if you’re not in a hurry and don’t need a Madrid jersey, the bus is the best value option. Luggage goes in the storage compartment at the bottom of the bus, making boarding very convenient.
Practical Suggestions
If you’re staying in the city center or near a metro station, consider getting off at Cibeles or O’Donnell and transferring to the metro, which might get you to your destination faster than going all the way to Atocha station. Also, while the Cercanías airport train is an option, it requires an additional ticket purchase and doesn’t run as frequently as the Madrid metro fares system.
Finally, if there are three or four people traveling together, splitting a taxi fare works out to about the same price and is more direct. But for solo travelers, the bus is definitely the most cost-effective option.
