When I first arrived in Madrid, I was quite unfamiliar with airport transportation. Today I’m organizing information about airport bus fares, hoping to help friends who are planning to come to Madrid or have just arrived.
Current Fare Situation
The Express bus from Madrid Barajas Airport currently costs 5 euros for a single journey, which is the price after the 2024 adjustment. It was free for quite a long time before, but now they’ve reinstated the fare. However, compared to taxis that easily cost 30-40 euros, the bus is still the most economical choice.

Ticket Purchase Options Comparison
I’ve tried several ticket purchase methods and compiled a simple comparison table:
| Purchase Method | Price | Convenience | Notes |
| On-board purchase | 5€ | Medium | Card or cash accepted |
| EMT official website | 5€ | High | Advance purchase required |
| Mobile APP | 5€ | Highest | Most convenient and quick |
| 10-trip ticket | 12.20€ | Low | Metro only, not valid |
Special reminder: The metro 10-trip ticket cannot be used for the airport bus, please note this.
Operating Hours and Frequency
The Express bus operates 24 hours, which is really convenient. During the day, there’s roughly one bus every 15-20 minutes, while at night the frequency decreases to about every 35 minutes. There are stops at T1, T2, and T4 terminals, with the final destination being Atocha train station, passing through O’Donnell and Cibeles Square along the way.
The entire journey takes about 40 minutes, though it depends on traffic conditions - during Madrid prices peak hours it might take longer. Personally, I think if you’re not in a rush for Madrid jerseys, the bus offers the best value for money. Luggage goes in the storage compartment at the bottom of the bus, making boarding very convenient.
Practical Tips
If you’re staying in the city center or near a metro station, consider getting off at Cibeles or O’Donnell and transferring to the metro, which might get you to your destination faster than going all the way to Atocha station. Also, while the Cercanías airport train is an option, it requires buying a separate ticket and doesn’t run as Madrid metro fares frequently.
Finally, if there are three or four people traveling together, splitting a taxi fare works out to about the same cost and is more direct. But for solo travelers, the bus is definitely the most economical choice.
