After living in Madrid for nearly three years, I was genuinely shocked by supermarket seafood prices when I first arrived—shrimp starting at 20 euros per kilo. Later, after visiting local markets a few times with Spanish colleagues, I discovered where all the fresh and affordable seafood was hiding. Today I’ll share the best places I’ve found over these years for buying seafood.
Mercado de Maravillas - The Best Value Champion
This market in the Tetuán district is one of Madrid’s largest indoor markets. I usually go on Saturday mornings when the selection is best. There are about seven or eight seafood stalls here, and the Madrid shopping competition keeps prices low. Last weekend I bought large shrimp for 12 euros per kilo, almost half the price at Carrefour. I especially recommend Pescadería Los Hermanos near the north entrance—the owner is from Galicia and sources directly from the port.

Practical Price Comparison Table
| Seafood Type | Supermarket Price | Market Price | Savings |
| Atlantic Shrimp | 18-22 | 10-14 | 40% |
| Sea Bass | 15-18 | 9-12 | 35% |
| Squid | 12-15 | 7-10 | 42% |
| Mussels | 4-6 | 2.5-3.5 | 50% |
Other Markets Worth Visiting
Mercado de la Paz in the Salamanca district is positioned more upscale overall, but two seafood stalls offer reasonable prices with excellent quality. Perfect for buying specialty items like percebes or navajas that aren’t commonly found elsewhere.
Mercado de Chamberí is another great choice, right at the Iglesia metro station exit. Go around 3 PM on Wednesdays and Fridays for discounts, as vendors want to clear inventory before the weekend. Last month I found octopus for 9 euros per kilo there and made Pulpo a la gallega at home—much better than the 30-euro restaurant version.
Shopping Tips
Judging freshness isn’t difficult: for shrimp, check if the eyes are bright and black; for fish, look for bright red gills. Don’t be shy—ask the vendor to let you smell it. Fresh seafood only has a light ocean scent, never a fishy odor. I also recommend going between 10 AM and noon when stock is freshly replenished but crowds haven’t peaked yet.
If you live far from markets and can’t visit frequently, Mercamadrid’s website offers weekend delivery service with a 30-euro minimum and 5-euro delivery fee. While you can’t handpick items, prices are still cheaper than supermarkets, and everything comes directly from the market that day, as noted in guides about affordable Michelin restaurants in Madrid and Madrid cost of living.
