After living in Madrid for nearly three years, I’d like to share some of my go-to budget-friendly restaurants. These aren’t the touristy Instagram spots, but genuine local favorites where the prices are reasonable and the food is excellent.
Great Value Near Sol
Let’s start with a few places near the Sol metro station in the city center. Casa Labra has been operating for over a century, and their fried cod Bacalao is absolutely incredible—€3.50 per portion, or just over €6 with a glass of vermouth. It gets crowded at lunchtime, but tables turn over quickly. Also worth trying is La Campana for their bocadillo—massive sandwiches for only €5-6 that could easily feed two people.

Diverse Flavors in Lavapiés
The Lavapiés neighborhood is quite multicultural, with plenty of cheap and delicious small eateries. Taberna de Antonio Sánchez is my personal favorite—their weekday lunch menu is only €12, including starter, main course, dessert, and drink. Their braised oxtail may not look like much but literally melts in your mouth.
There’s also an Indian restaurant called Pakka that I highly recommend if you want to Madrid shopping switch things up. Their curry set menu is €8.50 with portions so generous I always end up taking leftovers home.
| Restaurant Name | Area | Average Cost | Recommended Dishes |
| Casa Labra | Sol | €6-10 | Fried cod, vermouth |
| La Campana | Sol | €5-8 | Bocadillo |
| Antonio Sánchez | Lavapiés | €12 | Lunch menu, braised oxtail |
| Pakka | Lavapiés | €8-12 | Curry set menu |
| El Brillante | Atocha | €6-9 | Squid sandwich |
A Classic Near Atocha Station
If you’re near Atocha and interested in affordable Michelin dining in Madrid, definitely try El Brillante. Their squid sandwich is €6.50—the calamari rings are perfectly crispy outside and tender inside, with fresh bread. This place is open 24 hours, so you can grab a late-night snack anytime.
Practical Tips
Finally, some money-saving tricks: most restaurants offer lunch menus that are much cheaper than dinner, typically €10-15. Standing at the bar is cheaper than sitting at a table—some places have a 30% price difference. Many small Madrid cost of living establishments are closed on weekends, so check opening hours beforehand.
Feel free to share your own budget-friendly finds, or let me know if you’ve tried any of the restaurants I mentioned!
