I’ve been frequently transiting through Madrid Airport for work lately, and sometimes I have several hours between flights. Instead of just waiting around in the terminal, why not venture out and explore? Today I’ll share some decent spots I’ve discovered near the airport.
Alameda de Osuna Park
About 20 minutes by metro from the airport, take Line 8 and get off at Alameda de Osuna station. This is a large urban park featuring the stunning El Capricho garden. Honestly, this garden is truly breathtaking, built in the 18th century with that classic Romantic style. If you have 3-4 hours for your layover, coming here to take a stroll is perfect, and you can also explore some Madrid cuisine nearby.

San Fernando Market
If you want to experience the local market atmosphere, head to Mercado de San Fernando. While not as famous as the markets in the city center, it’s more authentic. Weekends tend to be busier, but weekdays are quite peaceful. Inside you’ll find various tapas stalls with prices lower than downtown. It requires a transfer from the airport, but the total journey is only about half an hour.
Last time I had fried calamari with beer there for just 8 euros, and it was quite authentic. Around the market there are also some Madrid restaurants and small shops worth browsing, convenient for picking up souvenirs.
Corredor Park
This park is even closer to the airport, accessible by bus routes 111 or 200. It’s a relatively new park, opened in 2018. The design is modern with dedicated running and cycling paths. If you only have 1-2 hours, coming here for some fresh air is a good option.
The park also has a small children’s play area, so if you’re traveling with kids during your layover, they can burn off some energy here, and you might even check out Madrid fishing spots nearby. There are several coffee shops in the vicinity where you can sit down for a coffee and use the WiFi.
Practical Tips
Don’t even think about going to the city center unless you have more than 5 hours for your layover. While Madrid’s transportation is convenient, the round trip to and from the airport still takes time – don’t risk missing your flight.
I recommend checking the metro or bus schedules in advance; Madrid’s public transport is quite punctual. The airport has free WiFi, so you can use Google Maps to plan your route. Remember to leave at least 1 hour to get back to the airport, as security lines can sometimes be long.
One final reminder: if your luggage is already checked through to your final destination, going out will be much easier. But if you need to re-check in, you’ll have to store your luggage at the airport – Terminal T4 has luggage storage services.
