Last week, I went to Madrid with a few friends to watch a Champions League match. As a die-hard Paris Saint-Germain supporter, it was my first time walking around near the Bernabéu wearing our jersey, and honestly, I felt a bit nervous. However, the actual experience was much friendlier than I expected, though we did encounter some challenges. Here at Real Madrid fan gathering spots, I’d like to share my experience with everyone.
Pre-Match Preparation and Street Atmosphere
On match day afternoon, we arrived near the Bernabéu about 4 hours early. Madrid’s football culture is genuinely vibrant, with Real Madrid jerseys everywhere. Wearing our Paris jerseys, we definitely stood out in the crowd, but most Real Madrid fans were very friendly. Some even approached us in English, asking where we were from. I must say, the Spanish passion for football is truly contagious.

Safety Precautions
While the overall atmosphere was positive, there are still some details to be mindful of. We encountered a few rather excited local fans, especially near bars, where some people became more impulsive after drinking. My advice: don’t linger too long in areas with concentrated bars, keep a low profile, and avoid provocative behavior or language. Also, keep your valuables secure—my friend’s phone was nearly stolen on the metro.
After the match ends and you’re leaving the stadium, I recommend away fans wait a bit rather than leaving immediately. Once the crowd disperses somewhat, it’s safer to depart. We waited about half an hour, which helped us avoid the most congested period.
Matchday Experience Comparison
Speaking of the viewing experience, I should give an objective assessment. The Bernabéu facilities are indeed excellent with great sightlines, but the ticket prices are truly expensive. We bought tickets in the away section, and each one cost around 150 euros. By comparison, watching matches at Parc des Princes offers much better value for money.
| Category | Santiago Bernabéu | Parc des Princes |
| Average Ticket Price | 120-200€ | 60-120€ |
| Stadium Atmosphere | Traditional & Solemn | Modern & Energetic |

Recommendations for Other Away Fans
If you’re also planning to attend an away match in Madrid, I have a few suggestions: First, book your hotel in advance, as prices near the stadium skyrocket on match days. Second, learn a few basic Spanish phrases—while many people speak English, locals appreciate seeing you make an effort to communicate in Spanish and will be friendlier. Third, don’t forget to try the local tapas and beer; they’re genuinely excellent.
This Madrid trip was definitely worthwhile. Although we lost the match too heartbroken to talk about it, the entire away game experience at Royal Madrid fans gave me a deeper understanding of Spanish football culture. If Uncle Seahorse has the opportunity, I’ll go again, because that’s the beauty of football—whether home or away, enjoying the game itself is what matters most.
