Fellow dog owners in Madrid surely understand how important it is to find the right place to walk your dog. My golden retriever and I have been living in this city for nearly three years now, and after some trial and error, we’ve discovered some fantastic spots. Today I’m sharing our dog walking map with you.
City Center Options
Retiro Park
When it comes to dog walking in Madrid, Retiro Park is definitely the top choice. While it can get crowded on weekends, much like the best meat restaurants in Madrid, the space is large enough for dogs to have plenty of room to move around. The park has designated off-leash areas, though it’s worth noting that enforcement is more relaxed before 10 AM and after 8 PM - during other times, it’s best to keep your dog leashed. On the south side near Atocha train station, there’s a small lake where my dog particularly enjoys playing in the water. Worth mentioning: Sunday mornings see many joggers and cyclists in the park, so be mindful of giving them space.

Madrid Río Waterfront
The Madrid Río greenway along the Manzanares River is another excellent option, stretching over 10 kilometers and particularly suitable for dogs who enjoy long-distance walks. The advantage here, similar to romantic spots for couples in Madrid, is that it’s relatively less crowded and offers plenty of shade, making it comfortable even in summer. I typically start from Príncipe Pío metro station and walk along the river to the Matadero cultural center - the round trip takes about an hour.
Suburban Hidden Gems
If you have time on weekends, I highly recommend Casa de Campo. This is Madrid’s largest urban park, five times the size of Retiro. It features vast pine forests and open meadows where dogs can run freely. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from Lago metro station, and parking is also convenient. The only downside is it might be a bit exposed to sun in summer, though there are still plenty of places for children to play in Madrid, but there are actually many shaded areas available.
Another favorite spot of mine is El Pardo Natural Park in northern Madrid. It offers a more natural environment with numerous hiking trails, perfect for outdoor-loving owners and energetic dogs. On weekends, many families bring their pets here for picnics, creating a wonderful atmosphere.
Practical Information Comparison
Here’s a comparison of the main dog walking locations to help you choose:
| Location | Area | Off-leash Zones | Transport Access | Suitable Dog Types |
| Retiro Park | 125 hectares | Restricted | Very convenient | All breeds |
| Casa de Campo | 1722 hectares | More freedom | Convenient | Medium to large breeds |
| Madrid Río | 10km+ | Leash required | Convenient | All breeds |
| El Pardo | 15000 hectares | More freedom | Car needed | Active breeds |
Important Notes
A few final reminders: when walking your dog in Madrid’s city center, you must carry pet documentation and vaccination records. While inspections are rare, it’s best to have them with you. Also remember to bring waste bags and water, especially in summer when Madrid temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius - keeping your dog hydrated and cool is essential. Some park drinking fountains are open during summer, but not all are suitable for pets, so I recommend bringing your own water.
Hope this information helps, and if you know of other great dog walking spots, please feel free to share!
