Over the past few months, I’ve gradually visited several towns around Madrid and Barcelona, and each place has its own unique character. Today I’m organizing my notes to share some destinations I think are definitely worth visiting.
Around Madrid
Toledo
It takes about 30 minutes by train from Madrid, and this ancient city is truly atmospheric. The entire old town is built on a hill, and walking along the cobblestone streets you’ll see all kinds of medieval architecture. The Cathedral and Alcázar fortress are must-see attractions, but I personally prefer wandering through the small alleyways where you’ll discover many interesting handicraft shops. I recommend going early, as it gets very crowded with tourists in the afternoon.

Segovia
Segovia is most famous for its Roman aqueduct, which is truly impressive. The Alcázar of Segovia in the old town is said to be the inspiration for Disney’s castle, and from the castle you can overlook the entire city. By the way, the roast suckling pig here in Madrid surroundings is a local specialty. I recommend trying Mesón de Cándido restaurant—though a bit pricey, the taste is genuinely excellent.
| Town Name | Distance from Madrid | Recommended Stay | Main Attractions |
| Toledo | 70km | One day | Cathedral, Old Town |
| Segovia | 90km | Half day to one day | Roman Aqueduct, Castle |
| El Escorial | 50km | Half day | Royal Monastery |
Around Barcelona
Girona
About 40 minutes by train from Barcelona, this small city feels particularly peaceful. The Jewish Quarter in the old town is very distinctive, with colorful houses lined along the river—perfect for photos. You can walk along the city walls for great views. Game of Thrones filmed scenes here, so if you’re a fan you’ll be excited.
Sitges
This is a coastal town just 30 minutes by train from Barcelona. Summer is the best time to visit—the beach quality is good and the water is quite clean. The town itself is also beautiful, with many small bars and restaurants. On weekends, locals also come here to Madrid estates vacation, so the atmosphere is particularly nice. If you want to escape Barcelona’s crowds, coming here to relax is a great choice.
There are so many places worth exploring around Madrid and Barcelona. These towns each have their own character, and Brihuega transportation is quite convenient—they’re really great for weekend or holiday trips. If you’ve been to other interesting places, feel free to share your experiences.
