When I first arrived in Madrid, I struggled with this question too. How many days does it really take to experience this city? Now, after living here near Plaza Mayor for three years, I’d like to share my perspective.
Quick Visit: 3 Days Is Enough
If you just want to tick off the major landmarks, three days can cover the essentials. Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Royal Palace, Prado Museum, Retiro Park—with a tight schedule, you can see them all in two and a half days. But honestly, this pace will exhaust you, and you’ll only scratch the surface of what Madrid really is.

I recommend at least 5 to 7 days. Why? Because Madrid’s charm isn’t about the monuments themselves—it’s about absorbing the city’s rhythm. The tapas bars that don’t open until 10:30 AM, lunches that start at 3 PM, crowds still strolling the streets at 10 PM—this is the real Madrid.
Experience Comparison by Length of Stay
| Days | What You Can Experience | Best For |
| 2-3 days | Major attractions only | Business travelers on tight schedules |
| 4-5 days | Attractions + neighborhood exploration | Average tourists |
| 6-7 days | In-depth experience + nearby towns | Dedicated travelers |
| One week+ | Immersion in local lifestyle | Long-term visitors or exchange students |
My Personal Recommendation
For first-timers, 6 days is the sweet spot. Spend the first three days on the classic route, day four exploring Malasaña or Chueca to feel the young vibe, day five visiting Toledo or Segovia, and day six wandering freely—maybe revisiting a favorite museum or simply watching the sunset by Templo de Debod.
Don’t make my first-visit mistake of cramming 15 attractions into three days—I remembered nothing afterward. Madrid isn’t meant to be rushed. It demands you slow down. Sipping coffee in a small plaza in Lavapiés, browsing vintage shops in Malasaña, drifting in a rowboat on Retiro Park all afternoon—these seemingly “time-wasting” moments are what make you remember the city.
So when someone asks me how long to spend in Madrid, considering the passion you’d find during a Madrid derby, my answer is: minimum five days, ideally a week, and if possible, stay a month. Because this city reveals more the longer you know it—every neighborhood has its own personality, every time of day offers different scenery.
