I finally found a suitable private school for my child in central Madrid after spending nearly three months on the search. Today I want to share my experience, hoping it can help parents who are currently looking for schools for their children.
Why Choose a Private School in the City Center
To be honest, we initially considered schools in the suburbs, as they offer better environments and relatively lower tuition fees. However, we later realized that the time cost of daily drop-offs and pick-ups was too high, especially given Madrid’s traffic conditions that everyone is familiar with. Although schools in the city center are more expensive, the time saved on commuting allows children to rest more or participate in extracurricular activities. Moreover, many quality private schools are concentrated in areas like Chamberí, Salamanca, and Chamartín.
Main School Comparisons
I visited five schools and compiled a simple comparison table for reference:
| School Name | Annual Tuition Range | Class Size | Language Programs |
| Colegio Ramón y Cajal | €8000-10000 | 20-25 students | Spanish-English-German |
| British Council School | €9500-12000 | 18-22 students | English-Spanish-French |
| Liceo Europeo | €7500-9500 | 22-28 students | Spanish-English |
| Colegio Estudio | €8500-11000 | 20-24 students | Spanish-English-French |

Application Process and Important Considerations
The application process is similar across most schools, typically requiring preparation six months to a year in advance. First, you need to fill out the solicitud de admisión on the school’s website, then wait for notification to attend an interview. Special reminder: spots at popular schools are extremely limited, so it’s best to start inquiring a year in advance.
The interview usually consists of two parts: first, an assessment of the child’s abilities, mainly testing language proficiency and basic subject knowledge. Then there’s a parent interview where the school learns about Madrid West District Schools and assesses whether the family’s educational philosophy aligns with the school’s. I prepared many materials at the time, but what schools value most is the child’s overall qualities and the family’s commitment to education.
Tuition and Other Expenses
Besides tuition, there are some hidden costs to consider. For example, uniform costs are approximately €300-500, extracurricular activity fees range from €50-150 per month, and lunch fees are generally €150-200 per month. Overall, excluding tuition, you should budget approximately €3000-4000 for other miscellaneous expenses per year.
Some Madrid Blue Ribbon Schools offer sibling discounts. If you have two or more children attending the same school, the second child can receive a 10-15% tuition reduction. Also note that most private schools don’t accept installment payments and require full annual payment or payment by semester.
My Final Choice
After comprehensive consideration, we ultimately chose a school in the Chamberí district. Although the tuition isn’t the cheapest, the teaching staff and facilities are excellent, and it’s only a 15-minute walk from home. My child has adapted very well and looks forward to going to school every day.
If you’re also considering Madrid private schools, I highly recommend visiting in person and communicating with parents of current students. Every family has different needs, and what works for others may not work for you. The most important thing is finding a school that best matches your child’s characteristics.
