Just booked my flight to Madrid and suddenly realized I had no idea what places are worth visiting around the city. After lurking on forums for a few days, reading through numerous posts, and doing my own research, I’ve compiled several great destinations to share with everyone.
Toledo: Top Choice for a Day Trip
Toledo is only 70 kilometers from Madrid, just a 30-minute train ride away. This ancient city is perfect for history and architecture enthusiasts. The entire old town is a World Heritage Site, and walking along the cobblestone streets you’ll see Gothic cathedrals, synagogues, and mosques coexisting. I personally recommend allocating at least 5-6 hours, as there are many uphill paths and you’ll spend a lot of time walking, stopping, and taking photos. In the evening, the restaurants and bars around the plaza are especially lively - try the local ham and wine. It’s about 2.5 hours from Madrid, and I’d recommend staying overnight for a more relaxed experience.

Ávila’s Medieval Walls
Ávila’s main attraction is its well-preserved medieval walls. You can walk along the walls and overlook the entire city.
