Recently while planning my Madrid itinerary, I noticed many friends asking how much time each attraction typically takes. I’ve compiled my own experience to help everyone out.
Museum Attractions
Prado Museum
This is one of Madrid’s most important art museums, housing an extensive collection of Spanish and European masterpieces. If you’re an art enthusiast, I recommend allocating at least 3-4 hours. During my last visit, I spent nearly 2 hours just viewing works by Goya and Velázquez. If you only want to see a few representative pieces, 2 hours will suffice. Remember to buy tickets in advance on the official website - the on-site queue can be really long.
Reina Sofía Art Center mainly exhibits modern art, including Picasso’s “Guernica”. It’s relatively smaller, and 1.5-2 hours is enough to cover the main galleries.

Historical Building Attractions
The Royal Palace of Madrid is one of Europe’s largest palaces with incredibly ornate interiors. I suggest setting aside 2-3 hours for your visit. If you opt for the audio guide, you may need additional time. The Almudena Cathedral outside the palace is also worth a quick look - add another 30 minutes for that.
Almudena Cathedral is right next to the palace, with a relatively simple interior - 30 minutes is sufficient. However, if you want to climb the tower for panoramic views of Madrid, you’ll need an extra hour.
Parks and Plazas
Retiro Park is Madrid’s largest park, perfect for leisurely strolls. If you’re just walking around, 1-1.5 hours will do. But if you want to rent a rowboat or visit the Crystal Palace, I recommend allocating 2-3 hours. On weekends, the park often features street performers, making it worthwhile to linger longer.
Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor are both iconic locations, but neither is particularly large. Combined, including photos and exploring the surroundings, 1 hour is enough. No need to dedicate too much time.
Other Worthwhile Places
San Miguel Market is a great place to sample Spanish cuisine, though it gets very crowded. If you want to enjoy a proper meal, allow 1.5-2 hours. The Temple of Debod, an ancient Egyptian temple, is especially beautiful at sunset - 30 minutes to 1 hour is sufficient, and you can catch Madrid’s sunset while you’re there.
Helpful Tip: Many Madrid museums are closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. Also, during summer, it gets particularly hot between 2 PM and 5 PM - this is the ideal time for indoor attractions.
Here’s my compiled timetable for major attractions:
| Attraction Name | Recommended Time | Notes |
| Prado Museum | 2-4 hours | Art lovers need more time |
| Royal Palace of Madrid | 2-3 hours | Including audio guide |
| Retiro Park | 1.5-3 hours | Depends on personal pace |
| Reina Sofía Art Center | 1.5-2 hours | Modern art |
| Puerta del Sol + Plaza Mayor | 1 hour | Can visit en route |
Madrid’s attractions are fairly concentrated, with many places within walking distance. I suggest not over-scheduling your itinerary - leave some time for street wandering or sitting at a small tavern. That’s the best way to experience Madrid. Hope this information helps everyone!
