Madrid Royal Palace On-Site Ticket Purchase Guide: Queue Times, Prices and Practical Tips
Last month I visited the Madrid Royal Palace and chose to buy tickets on-site rather than booking online in advance. Many friends have asked me about the on-site ticket buying experience, so I’ve compiled this post to share with everyone.
Ticket Office Location and Opening Hours
The Madrid Royal Palace ticket office is located on the right side of the main entrance with clear signage. Winter opening hours are 10:00-18:00, and summer hours are 10:00-20:00. Please note that the ticket office stops selling tickets 1 hour before closing time, so don’t cut it too close when visiting the Madrid Royal Palace and Temple of Debod.

Queue Times and Ticket Prices
I arrived around 11:00 AM on a Wednesday and waited in queue for approximately 40 minutes. According to on-site staff, weekday mornings are typically the least crowded period. Weekend and holiday queue times are much longer, sometimes requiring 1.5-2 hours of waiting.
| Ticket Type | Price | Notes |
| Adult Ticket | €13 | Standard admission |
| Reduced Ticket | €7 | Students, seniors 65+ |
| Free | €0 | EU citizens |
Pros and Cons of On-Site Ticket Purchase
The advantage is flexibility - no need to plan ahead, you can decide to visit spontaneously. Plus, you save on online booking fees. The downside is the queuing time, especially during peak season. If your itinerary is tight, I’d recommend booking tickets online in advance.
Practical Tips
I suggest arriving at 10:00 AM opening time on weekdays when queues are shortest. If you’re visiting on a weekend, it’s best to buy tickets in advance on the official website. Also, avoid queuing during tour group peak hours as it wastes a lot of time. Bring your student ID or senior card to enjoy reduced ticket prices.
After touring the palace, you can visit the nearby Sabatini Gardens, which are free and offer beautiful scenery. The entire visit including photos takes about 2-3 hours, so plan your time accordingly. For more information about the Madrid Royal Palace area, check out additional resources.
