My neighbor, a Chinese lady, obtained hers last year right after turning 65, and now she takes the metro to Retiro Park for her daily walks completely free.
Required Documents for Application
Obtaining this card is actually not complicated, but you must have all materials ready. Based on information I gathered about Madrid’s free football fields, you mainly need: identification document, proof of address registration, one ID photo, and your previous transport card if you have one. Important reminder: the proof of address registration must be current; they won’t accept expired documents.

Application Process and Important Notes
You can go directly to any CRTM office or certain metro service centers. When I accompanied my neighbor, we went to the Plaza de Castilla office at 9 AM and waited about 40 minutes in line. Staff will check your documents, and once everything is verified, you’ll receive a temporary card on the spot. The official card will be mailed to your home in about 15 days.
This free card covers metro, buses, light rail, and suburban trains in Zone A, basically all public transport within Madrid city center. However, note that the metro to the airport requires an additional fee; this free card doesn’t include the airport supplement. Also, this card needs to be recharged monthly for activation. Although it’s free, you must go to a charging machine and select the free option.
