Recently planning a trip to see the Mosque-Cathedral in Córdoba, I researched the routes from Madrid and compiled this guide to share with everyone.
Basic Distance Information
The straight-line distance from Madrid to Córdoba is approximately 320 kilometers, though the actual travel distance varies depending on your chosen route. If you take the A-4 highway, similar to the Barcelona to Madrid route, the total distance is around 400 kilometers. This journey crosses two autonomous communities—Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia—with landscapes transitioning from central plateau to southern hills.
Transportation Options Comparison
| Transport Mode | Duration | Price Range | Advantages |
| AVE High-Speed Train | 1h 45min | €30-70 | Fast & comfortable |
| Regional Train | 4-5 hours | €20-40 | Budget-friendly |
| Long-Distance Bus | 4.5-5 hours | €15-25 | Most economical |
| Self-Drive | 3.5-4 hours | €40 fuel | Flexible freedom |

My Recommendation: AVE High-Speed Train
I highly recommend taking the AVE high-speed train. While slightly more expensive, it offers the best time efficiency. Departing from Madrid’s Atocha station, you’ll reach Córdoba Central station in under 2 hours. Booking in advance on the Renfe website often yields discounted fares, especially with Promo and Promo+ tickets, sometimes at half price. Morning departures are more frequent, and afternoon return trips are convenient.
The train offers free WiFi, spacious seating, and scenic views of olive groves along the way. Upon arrival at Córdoba station, it’s a 15-minute walk or a €5 taxi ride to the old town’s Jewish Quarter and the Mosque-Cathedral.
Self-Driving Considerations
If you choose to drive, similar to checking the Madrid Barcelona distance, the self-drive option via A-4 highway is in excellent condition, with tolls around €15. However, parking in Córdoba’s old town is challenging—I recommend using peripheral public parking lots and walking into the historic center. Also, if traveling in summer, prepare for sun protection as Córdoba temperatures frequently exceed 40°C.
Practical Tips
While long-distance buses are the cheapest option, comfort is compromised, and similar to the Lisbon Madrid distance route, traffic delays are common. If on a tight budget, consider overnight buses from Alsa or Socibus—though sleep quality isn’t great, you’ll save on accommodation. The Media Distancia regional train offers scenic views and suits travelers with flexible schedules seeking savings.
This distance is manageable for a day trip, but I recommend staying at least one night in Córdoba to fully experience this ancient city’s charm.
