Recently, while preparing to register a company trademark, I discovered that many friends are not quite familiar with the trademark search process in Madrid. Today I’m sharing the experience I’ve figured out, hoping it can help those in need.
Why Conduct a Trademark Search
Before registering a trademark in Spain, trademark search is an essential step. Conducting a search in advance can avoid conflicts with already registered trademarks, saving time and money. I previously didn’t do my homework properly and almost chose a name that was already registered, fortunately discovering it in time.

Introduction to Main Search Websites
Based on my user experience, these are the most commonly used websites:
| Website Name | Search Scope | Features |
| OEPM Official Website | Within Spain | Official and authoritative, most updated data |
| EUIPO | EU-wide | Covers all member states |
| WIPO | International trademarks | Madrid System search |
OEPM is the official website of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, located at www.oepm.es. This website provides free trademark database search services, with an interface in both Spanish and English versions, making it relatively user-friendly.
After entering the OEPM website, click on the “Bases de Datos” section and select the “Marcas” option. In the search box, enter the trademark name or keywords you wish to query, and the system will display relevant results. Remember to search in Spanish or English, as this will yield more accurate results.
If you need to search for EU-wide trademarks, you can visit the EUIPO website at euipo.europa.eu, with a similar process but broader coverage. For friends with international business needs related to Madrid rental websites, WIPO’s global brand database is also worth trying.
Practical Advice
When searching, it’s recommended to use different keyword combinations, as some trademarks may use variants or similar names. Also pay attention to trademark categories, as the same name may be registered in different categories, a point that’s easily overlooked.
If the search results are complex or involve legal issues, handling it yourself it’s still advisable to consult a professional intellectual property lawyer. After all, trademark registration is a serious matter, and professional advice can help you avoid many troubles.
Hope this information is helpful to everyone. If you have other questions, feel free to discuss in the comments section.
