I made a point of getting up early this morning to visit the Mercamadrid wholesale market located in Villaverde, and also checked out a few seafood shops near my home. I’d like to share with you the current seafood prices here in Madrid. After all, for those of us living in Spain, who doesn’t want fresh and affordable seafood?

Mercamadrid Wholesale Market Prices
Let me start with Mercamadrid, Europe’s second-largest wholesale market, where prices are indeed significantly lower than retail shops. However, please note that this Madrid wholesale market typically opens at 4 AM and closes around 10 AM at the latest. Also, many stalls at the Madrid Ma Market only accept cash payments. When I went today around 7 AM, the foot traffic was quite heavy.
| Seafood Type | Mercamadrid Price | Regular Market Price |
| Large Prawns | 12-15€/kg | 18-22€/kg |
| Octopus | 8-10€/kg | 14-18€/kg |
| Sea Bass | 7-9€/kg | 12-15€/kg |
| Squid | 6-8€/kg | 10-13€/kg |
| Mussels | 2-3€/kg | 4-6€/kg |
Retail Market Comparison Across Districts
If you find Mercamadrid too far or the timing inconvenient for your Madrid shopping market trips, there are actually plenty of excellent seafood shops across Madrid’s various districts. I frequently visit Marisquería El Pescador in Chamberí district, as well as several established shops in Salamanca district. While these places are pricier than the wholesale market, they’re convenient and the owners will clean and prepare the seafood for you.
Weekend Market Recommendations
For weekends, I highly recommend visiting Mercado de Maravillas or Mercado de San Miguel. While San Miguel has become somewhat touristy, Maravillas still maintains that authentic local market atmosphere. Last Saturday I bought fresh prawns there for just 16€ per kilogram, and the quality was excellent. Also, many seafood shops offer special deals on Friday afternoons, so keep an eye out for those.
Finally, a quick tip: when buying seafood, always check that the eyes are clear, the gills are bright red, and give it a sniff. Fresh seafood should have a mild ocean scent, not a fishy odor. I hope this information helps everyone, and feel free to share any questions or comments.
