Last month I renewed my passport at the Madrid consulate and am currently in the waiting stage for delivery. I’d like to share some experiences and important notes from this process, hoping it will help others who are also waiting for their passports.
Processing Time After Application
From submitting the application to receiving the passport, it generally takes 15 to 30 business days. I submitted my documents in early October, and the staff said it would be sent out in about three weeks. However, the specific time varies depending on the application volume at that time, and it may take slightly longer during peak seasons. I recommend asking about the approximate timeframe when applying so you know what to expect.

How to Check Passport Status
The consulate provides a tracking system where you can check the progress online using the application reference number from when you applied. I check every few days, and although updates aren’t very frequent, at least I know which stage it’s at. The status generally includes: under review, in production, and dispatched.
| Status | Description | Approximate Time |
| Under Review | Document verification stage | 3-5 business days |
| In Production | Passport printing stage | 10-15 business days |
| Dispatched | Courier delivery stage | 3-7 business days |
Delivery Method and Receipt
Passports are generally sent via registered mail or courier, depending on the method you chose when applying. I chose courier because although it costs more, it’s safer and trackable. Regular registered mail is cheaper but slower, and you can’t track it in real-time. Make sure to provide an accurate delivery address and leave a phone number where you can always be reached, as the courier will contact you in advance to confirm.
Special Reminder: If you’re renting, remember to inform your landlord or roommates that an important document will be arriving to avoid it being received and forgotten. I had a friend whose passport sat at a neighbor’s place for several days before being retrieved.
What to Do If It Doesn’t Arrive
If you haven’t received it after the expected time, first check the status in the system. If it shows as dispatched for a long time but hasn’t arrived, contact the consulate for the tracking number and then trace it on the courier company’s website. If you really can’t find it, report it to the consulate promptly, and they will help investigate and arrange for a reissue. However, this situation is quite rare, and most people receive theirs normally.
Waiting for a passport can be nerve-wracking, but as long as your documents are in order, just be patient. If anyone has similar experiences regarding opening a bank account with a Madrid passport or questions, feel free to leave comments below for discussion.
