Madrid’s Legendary Half-Chicken Church
Last weekend I visited central Madrid specifically to see the famous San Isidro Cathedral. Many people may not know that this church has a special local nickname called the Half-Chicken Church, which sounds quite amusing, but there’s actually an interesting legend behind it.
The Legend of the Half-Chicken
According to legend, during medieval times, a pilgrim passing through Madrid Cathedral was falsely accused of theft while staying at an inn. The innkeeper presented a roasted chicken as evidence at San José Church, claiming the pilgrim had stolen it. The pilgrim prayed to Saint Isidore, and miraculously, the already cooked half-chicken came back to life and fluttered on the table, proving his innocence. This story has been passed down through generations, and the church earned this nickname as a result.
Visiting Experience
The church is located on Calle de Toledo, about a ten-minute walk from Puerta del Sol. The building itself is典型 Baroque style with a dignified facade. The interior space isn’t particularly large, but the decorations are exquisite, especially the carved works on the main altar which are worth examining closely.

During my visit, I happened upon a small organ performance and sat on the pews listening for a while—the atmosphere was quite pleasant. Flash photography is not allowed inside the church, so keep that in mind.
Nearby Places Worth Exploring
After leaving the church, walk a few blocks south to reach the Latin Quarter, where you’ll find many tapas bars. I found a place near Plaza de la Cava Baja and ordered several tapas with vermouth—reasonably priced and tasty. On weekends this area gets quite crowded, so I’d recommend going early to secure a spot.
If you’re interested in religious architecture, the nearby San Andrés Church is also worth visiting, as the two churches are very close to each other.
While this church may not be as famous as Almudena Cathedral, the half-chicken legend adds a unique charm to it. It’s perfect for a half-day itinerary combining the church, the surrounding old town, and tapas bars to experience Madrid’s everyday atmosphere.
