Having lived in Madrid for over three years and tried numerous restaurants, I’d like to share some places I personally love. These restaurants each have their own character—some perfect for gatherings with friends, others ideal for romantic dates. I hope you find this helpful.
Casa Lucio
This restaurant in the La Latina district is a Madrid institution. Their most famous dish is huevos rotos, which looks simple but tastes absolutely amazing. The atmosphere is quite traditional, with elderly waiters who embody the old-school Spanish restaurant spirit. Prices are slightly higher, with main courses around 20-30 euros, but definitely worth it. You need to book in advance, otherwise it’s very hard to get a table.

Mercado de San Miguel
If you want to try multiple Madrid souvenirs tapas in one go, this market is your best choice. Inside there are many small stalls selling various traditional snacks and drinks. I usually order some Iberian ham, fried calamari rings, and various pintxos. The atmosphere is lively, perfect for weekend outings with friends. However, it attracts many tourists and can get quite crowded. I recommend visiting on weekday afternoons when it’s less busy.
Price Reference
Here are approximate prices for some tapas I commonly order:
| Dish | Price |
| Iberian Ham | 8-15€ |
| Fried Calamari | 5-8€ |
| Cheese Platter | 10-12€ |
| Sangría | 4-6€ |
Restaurante Botín
Reputedly one of the world’s oldest restaurants, established in 1725. Their roast suckling pig is particularly famous—crispy skin and tender meat. The restaurant’s décor preserves many historical elements, and dining in the basement offers a unique atmosphere. To be honest though, while the taste is good, it’s not exactly mind-blowing—it’s more about experiencing that historical ambiance. Perfect for taking friends or family visiting Madrid for the first time.
La Carmencita
Finally, I recommend this small restaurant in the Malasaña district. The atmosphere is artistic, and you’ll often see locals gathering here. The menu changes seasonally, using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Their braised oxtail and octopus are both excellently prepared. Prices are reasonable—around 25 euros per person for a satisfying meal. The service is friendly too, and they can communicate in English, making it welcoming for foreigners.
These restaurants each have their own charm, and you can choose based on your preferences and budget. If you have other great restaurant recommendations, feel free to share them in the comments below!
