Just got back from Málaga and wanted to share my car rental experience at the airport. As an important gateway to the Andalusia region, Málaga Airport has quite mature car rental services, but there are plenty of tricks to watch out for.

Málaga Airport has over a dozen car rental company counters, mainly concentrated in the arrivals level of Terminal 3. This time, after completing my Málaga Airport tax refund, I compared several common companies:

Important Reminder: Many budget car rental companies will push various additional insurance and services during pick-up, such as GPS, child seats, additional drivers, etc. These can easily double your actual costs at Málaga Airport, so booking a full insurance package online in advance will be much more economical.
Pick-up Process and Precautions
The rental counter is inside the terminal, but actual vehicle pick-up requires taking a shuttle bus to the parking lot. Note this point - allow at least 40 minutes for the entire process. Staff will very carefully inspect the vehicle’s exterior, using their phone to photograph every scratch. My advice is to also record video throughout, especially around the body, wheel rims, and windshield - areas prone to disputes.
Another pitfall to watch out for: fuel tank policy. Some companies at the Málaga Airport duty-free shop operate on a full-to-full basis, but companies like Goldcar require you to prepay for a full tank and return it without refueling. Sounds convenient, but it’s nearly impossible to use exactly all the fuel, meaning you’re essentially giving the rental company money for half a tank.
Actual Driving Experience
The highways around Málaga are in excellent condition, and the AP-7 coastal highway offers stunning scenery. However, be aware that many Spanish highways are toll roads that don’t accept cash - you’ll need a credit card or purchase an electronic toll tag in advance. When renting, ask if the company provides a Telepeaje device to avoid fumbling at toll booths.
City parking is also an issue. Many streets in Málaga’s old town are narrow with limited parking. Blue lines indicate paid parking zones, green lines are for short-term resident parking, and only white lines are free. If you’re heading to mountain towns like Ronda or Mijas, remember to rent an automatic transmission - manual transmission hill starts are genuinely exhausting.
Return Tips
Be sure to fill up the tank before returning. There are several gas stations near the airport, with the closest being Repsol, about 3 kilometers from Terminal 3. Don’t wait until the last minute to refuel - the airport area often has traffic congestion. During return, staff will inspect the vehicle condition again. If there are new scratches or damage, the photos and videos you took earlier will come in handy.
