Malaga Travel Costs: A 2024 First-Hand Experience
I recently returned from Malaga and wanted to share my experience with the costs in this coastal city. As an important city in the Andalusia region, Malaga’s tourism industry has developed rapidly in recent years, with prices showing noticeable changes compared to a few years ago.
Accommodation Costs
Accommodation prices vary considerably. Mid-range hotels in the old town center typically cost around 60-90 euros per night. If you’re considering winter travel to Malaga, choosing vacation rentals or apartment hotels can be cheaper, around 40-70 euros. Beachfront accommodations are generally 20-30% more expensive, even higher during peak season. Hostel beds range from 18-25 euros, suitable for budget backpackers.
| Accommodation Type | Low Season Price | High Season Price |
| Budget Hotels | 40-60€ | 70-100€ |
| Mid-range Hotels | 60-90€ | 100-150€ |
| Sea View Hotels | 100-150€ | 180-250€ |
| Hostel Beds | 18-25€ | 30-40€ |

Dining Expenses
Malaga’s dining prices are relatively reasonable. Local restaurants typically offer daily menus (menú del día) for 10-15 euros, including starter, main course, and drink. Seafood is a specialty here - a serving of fresh grilled sardines costs about 8-12 euros, and fried fish platters run 15-20 euros. Cafe coffee prices range from 1.5-2.5 euros, beer 2-3 euros. High-end restaurants can reach 40-60 euros per person, though value for money isn’t always guaranteed.
Supermarket shopping is much cheaper than dining out - mineral water costs 0.3-0.5 euros, bread 1-2 euros, and fruits and vegetables are very affordable. I recommend preparing your own breakfast and having the daily menu for lunch to save significantly.
Transportation and Attractions
City transportation mainly relies on buses, with single tickets at 1.4 euros and 10-trip cards at 8.3 euros offering better value. The airport bus to city center costs 3 euros, taxis about 20-25 euros. Bike rentals run around 10-15 euros per day, making them a great option for exploring the old town.
For attraction tickets, the Picasso Museum permanent collection costs 9 euros, Alcazaba fortress 3.5 euros, and the Cathedral 6 euros. Many churches and small museums are free or accept small donations. Some museums offer free hours on Sundays - checking in advance can save you money.
Overall Budget Recommendations
Based on my actual expenses, basic daily costs for one person run approximately 50-80 euros. If you stay in hostels, eat mainly daily menus, and avoid high-end restaurants, you can manage on about 40 euros per day comfortably. For more comfortable accommodation and better dining, 100-150 euros daily would be more appropriate.
Malaga’s cost of living is medium-to-low for Spain - cheaper than Barcelona and Madrid, but slightly more expensive than smaller cities. With proper budget planning and choosing appropriate accommodation and dining options, you can enjoy this beautiful city’s charm while controlling costs.
