I’ve been planning a trip to Málaga recently and spent quite a bit of time researching the different seasons. I’d like to share my findings with you. As a coastal city in Andalusia, Málaga actually offers unique charms throughout the year—the key is determining what matters most to you.
Spring and Autumn: The Golden Seasons
Most people recommend April-June and September-October. Spring temperatures in Málaga range between 18-25°C, neither too hot nor too cold, making it particularly pleasant to stroll through the old town streets. Autumn is similar, and in September the sea is still warm enough for swimming. The biggest advantage of these seasons is that there are relatively fewer tourists, and hotel prices are about 20-30% cheaper than summer. I personally recommend May, when the wisteria blooms beautifully and you can catch some local festivals.

Summer: Paradise for Beach Lovers
If you’re going specifically for the Mediterranean sun and beaches, July-August is definitely the best choice. Temperatures reach above 30°C, but the sea breeze makes it quite bearable. Important to note that summer is peak season—beaches will be crowded and hotel prices are at their annual highest. Additionally, Spanish locals vacation during this time, so some local restaurants may actually close for holidays. However, summer nightlife is truly vibrant, with beachside chiringuitos staying open late into the night, creating a fantastic atmosphere.
Winter: The Budget-Friendly Option
November to March is the off-season, and the main advantage of visiting Málaga during this time is that prices are genuinely cheap. While you can’t swim in the sea, daytime temperatures still reach 15-18°C, much warmer than Northern Europe. Winter Málaga feels more like a local city, allowing you to experience local life more authentically. The city is beautifully decorated during Christmas, and there are sales around New Year. The only thing to watch out for is occasional rain—remember to bring an umbrella.

My Personal Recommendation
If you have flexible dates, I’d suggest choosing May or late September to early October rather than July-August. These periods offer great weather, reasonable prices, and you can avoid the crowds. If you’re on a tight budget or want to experience the city quietly, visiting Málaga in winter is perfectly fine—just adjust your expectations and focus on cultural experiences rather than beaches.
One final reminder: regardless of which season you choose, book your accommodation in advance, especially hotels near the old town. Good value rooms always get booked quickly. Feel free to ask if you have any other questions—I’ll do my best to answer.
