Recently planning a vacation to Málaga, I researched the train routes from Madrid and found them quite convenient. Here’s some practical information to share.
Train Types & Duration
There are mainly two options for Madrid to Málaga: AVE high-speed trains and MD medium-distance trains. AVE is the fastest, taking approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes from Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha station to Málaga’s María Zambrano station, and it’s very comfortable. MD trains are cheaper but take around 4 hours—worth considering if you’re not in a hurry.

Price Comparison
Prices vary significantly depending on timing and advance booking. Here’s a general price range I’ve compiled:
| Train Type | Advance Booking | Same-Day Purchase | Journey Time |
| AVE Turista | €25-45 | €60-80 | 2.5 hours |
| AVE Turista Plus | €40-65 | €85-110 | 2.5 hours |
| MD | €18-30 | €35-50 | 4 hours |
I recommend booking at least 2-3 weeks in advance to save considerably. Last time I bought an AVE ticket a month ahead for only €28—more than half off the last-minute price.
Booking Channels
The most convenient option is the Renfe official website or app, which accepts credit card payments. Note that you need to register an account to purchase tickets, and sometimes the website can be slow—patience required. Alternatively, the third-party platform Trainline is available with a more user-friendly interface, though it may charge a small service fee.
For ticket collection at the station, you can use the credit card from your purchase at self-service machines, or simply use your mobile e-ticket and scan to enter. I printed a paper ticket my first time, but later realized it was completely unnecessary.
Practical Tips
From experience, the most frequent departures are between 7-9 AM and 5-7 PM, with trains running basically every hour. Weekends and holidays get busier, so book seats in advance. AVE’s Turista Plus offers more spacious seating and includes complimentary drinks and snacks—worth the upgrade for longer journeys.
After arriving at Málaga station, the city center is very close—about €10 by taxi, or you can take the C1 or C2 commuter trains to downtown in just a few minutes. Overall, this route is very well-established and perfect for weekend getaways.
