Recently planning a vacation to Málaga, I researched Renfe routes and fares and thought I’d share some useful insights. The Madrid to Málaga line is one of Spain’s most popular train routes, especially in winter when many people head south to enjoy the sunshine.
Journey Duration and Train Types
From Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha station to Málaga María Zambrano station, the AVE high-speed train takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes at its fastest. I took the 9:30 AM departure last time and arrived just after noon—perfect timing. If you choose the regular MD train, it takes longer, about 4 hours, but the fare is considerably cheaper. For [Atlético Madrid vs Málaga] match schedules, timing matters.

Fare Comparison
I’ve created a simple price comparison table for reference:
| Train Type | Journey Time | Price Range | Comfort Level |
| AVE High-Speed | 2.5 hours | 45-85 EUR | Very Comfortable |
| AVANT | 3 hours | 30-60 EUR | Comfortable |
| MD Regular Train | 4+ hours | 20-40 EUR | Standard |
Booking Tips
Highly recommend booking tickets in advance on the Renfe website or app—the earlier you book, the cheaper it gets. I tried booking a month ahead and got an AVE Promo ticket for around 50 EUR, but last-minute purchases can cost double. Additionally, Renfe frequently runs promotions, so subscribe to their newsletter. Tuesdays and Thursdays seem to have more discounts—that’s the pattern I’ve observed. The onboard WiFi quality is decent, though the signal drops when passing through mountain areas, so download movies or music beforehand. The seating is spacious, and the Turista Plus carriage is even more comfortable, offering complimentary snacks and beverages.
Scenic Route
After departing Madrid, the train crosses the Castilian plains before entering Andalusia’s mountainous regions. When passing Córdoba, you can see the silhouette of the Mosque-Cathedral—unfortunately the train doesn’t stop if you want to visit Córdoba, you can choose to transfer there. As you approach Málaga, the Mediterranean Sea comes into view, and the scenery is truly therapeutic. Once in Málaga, the train station is very close to the city center—just a 15-minute walk to the beach. If you have lots of luggage, there are plenty of taxis and buses outside the station, making transportation very convenient. Overall, the Renfe experience on this route is excellent and much less hassle than flying. Highly recommended for anyone planning to visit Málaga.
