I just finished taking the train from Granada to Málaga and want to share my experience while it’s still fresh. This route is really useful for anyone traveling through Andalusia, as both cities are must-visit destinations.
Basic Information
The Granada to Málaga train is operated by Renfe, with two main types: the AVE high-speed train and the MD medium-distance train. The AVE takes about 1 hour 20 minutes, while the MD takes around 2 hours. I took the MD this time—although it’s slower, the fare is much cheaper, and you can enjoy the self-driving from Granada to Málaga scenery along the way.
Timetable and Fares
There are approximately 6-8 trains daily, with the earliest departure around 7 AM and the latest around 8 PM. Weekend schedules may have fewer services. Fares vary considerably:

Important note: booking online in advance is much cheaper. I bought my MD ticket two weeks ahead for only €16. If you buy at the station last minute, the same ticket could cost €22. You can purchase through the Renfe website or app, and credit cards are accepted. When Granada defeats Málaga or Granada CF versus Málaga, train demand increases.
Travel Experience
Granada’s train station is a bit far from the city center, so arrive at least 30 minutes early. The station is small but well-equipped, with cafés and convenience stores. Ticket gates open about 15 minutes before departure, and there’s no security screening, so boarding is quick.
The train carriages are quite comfortable—much better than buses—with power outlets and small tray tables. Although the MD isn’t high-speed, it’s still quite smooth. The route passes through olive groves and mountainous areas, and the scenery is truly beautiful, so make sure to get a window seat. There are restrooms onboard and vending machines for water and snacks.
Arriving in Málaga
Málaga’s María Zambrano train station is a major hub connected to metro and intercity buses. From the station to the city center or beaches is very convenient—about 15 minutes by metro. If you have lots of luggage, taxis are readily available outside the station, costing around €10 to the city center.
Overall, trains are more comfortable than buses, less stressful than renting a car, and have reliable schedules. The only thing to watch out for is that tickets can be tight during peak season, so definitely book in advance. Also, Renfe occasionally runs promotions, so keep an eye out for even better deals.
