I’ve been considering moving to Málaga recently and wanted to understand the actual scale of this city first. After researching extensively, I’m sharing what I found with everyone.

The urban area of Málaga covers approximately 398.25 square kilometers, which is considered a medium-to-large size among Spanish cities. When compared to other cities in the Andalusian region, Málaga’s area is second only to Seville. The city stretches about 20+ kilometers from east to west, with a slightly smaller north-south span. The city center is actually quite compact, and you can walk through all the main attractions.
Population Distribution
According to 2024 statistics, Málaga’s urban area is home to approximately 580,000 residents. If you include the entire metropolitan area, the population approaches 1 million. The population density is roughly 1,450 people per square kilometer. This density is moderate - not too crowded to feel cramped, yet not so sparse that it feels empty.
Population distribution across different areas of the city is quite uneven. The old town has the highest population density, while coastal areas are also bustling due to thriving tourism. The newly developed western and northern districts are relatively more spacious and suitable for families.

Public Transportation Coverage
Málaga’s public transportation system offers decent coverage. The metro currently has two lines with a total length of about 12 kilometers, connecting the city center with major residential areas. The bus network is quite dense - if you live within the urban area, you can reach most places within driving 20 minutes by bus.
From the airport on the far east to Torremolinos on the west, the drive takes about 40 minutes. If you’re interested in exploring nearby towns around Málaga and live in the city center, the beach is just a 10-minute drive away, which is truly convenient.
Personally, I feel Málaga’s scale is just right - it has all the conveniences of a big city without being overly large and crowded like Madrid or Barcelona. For those considering life in southern Spain and curious about Málaga’s wealthy neighborhoods, this city’s size is indeed ideal.
