I’ve recently been traveling frequently between Valencia and Alicante for work, and after trying several different transportation methods, I’d like to share my experience with you. The distance between these two cities is approximately 170 kilometers, and there are quite a few options available.
Train Travel
Departing from Valencia Nord station, you can take Renfe trains directly to Alicante. The journey takes between 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes, depending on whether you choose express or slower trains. I personally recommend high-speed trains like AVE or Euromed - while they’re a bit more expensive, the seat comfort and punctuality are excellent. Regional trains are cheaper, but they make many stops along the way and take longer.
Ticket prices vary significantly. If you book online in advance for Alicante transportation, AVE tickets can be as low as €15, but last-minute purchases might cost €30-40. Regular trains are much cheaper, around €10-15. I recommend downloading the Renfe APP as they frequently have promotional offers.

Long-Distance Bus
If you’re not in a hurry, ALSA buses are a good choice. Departing from Valencia bus station, the direct journey to Alicante takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Tickets usually cost between €8-12, considerably cheaper than trains. The buses have WiFi and charging ports, and the seats are reasonably spacious.
However, buses are more affected by traffic conditions and may experience delays during holidays or peak hours. I once took a Friday afternoon bus that took over 3 hours to arrive. So if your schedule is tight when considering Alicante transportation, trains are the safer bet.
Driving Experience
Driving yourself via the AP-7 highway, the road conditions are excellent, taking approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Tolls are around €12 one way, and with fuel costs, the total is similar to train fares. The advantage is flexibility - you can stop whenever you want and enjoy Mediterranean views along the way.
The only hassle is parking - parking spots in Alicante city center are hard to find and quite expensive. If you’re staying downtown, I’d recommend public transportation. But if you’re planning to explore surrounding towns with Alicante transportation, driving is very convenient.
