Last weekend I finally visited Santa Bárbara Castle. As Alicante’s landmark building, this castle sits atop Mount Benacantil at 166 meters high. Many friends have asked me how to get up there, so today I’m organizing the three access methods, hoping this will be helpful to everyone.
Comparison of Three Access Methods
The castle offers three different routes up the mountain, each with its own pros and cons. I’ve tried all three, so let me share detailed information about Santa Bárbara Castle.

Method One: Direct Elevator
The most effortless option, the elevator entrance is opposite Postiguet Beach, right at the end of Explanada Avenue. The elevator ticket costs 2.7 euros and takes you directly inside the castle. Operating hours are 10:00-20:00, extended to 22:00 in summer. The first time I went, I took the elevator and it took about 2 minutes.
| Method | Cost | Time | Difficulty |
| Elevator | 2.7€ | 2 minutes | Easy |
| Walking Trail | Free | 20-30 minutes | Moderate |
| Mountain Road | Free | 5 minutes by car | Easy |
Method Two: Hiking Trail
Free but requires physical effort, the entrance is near the Santa Cruz neighborhood in the old town. The trail winds up along the mountainside, offering different angles of sea views and city panoramas along the way. Last time I walked it took about 25 minutes, and sports shoes are recommended. Never wear high heels, as some sections of the path are quite steep. I suggest going in the morning or evening, as midday is too sunny.
Method Three: Driving or Taking a Taxi
If you’re driving to [Santa Bárbara Castle], you can take the winding mountain road directly to the castle parking lot. Parking is limited, and during peak season you might need to wait for a spot at [Santa Barbara Castle]. A taxi from the city center costs approximately 8-10 euros, or you can take a bus to the foot of the mountain and walk a short distance. This method is suitable for those traveling with elderly people or children, or anyone who doesn’t want to exert too much effort.
Personal Recommendation
My personal favorite combination is: take the elevator up, walk the trail down. This way you save energy while still enjoying the scenery. The castle itself is free to visit, only the elevator charges a fee. The mountaintop views are truly spectacular, offering a 360-degree panorama of all of Alicante and the Mediterranean Sea. I recommend allocating at least 1-2 hours for your visit. Remember to bring water and sunscreen, as there’s almost no shade at the top.
