Alicante Santa Barbara Castle Visitor Guide
Last weekend I visited Alicante and made the climb up to Santa Barbara Castle. This castle sits atop Mount Benacantil at 166 meters elevation, making it one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses along the entire Mediterranean coast. From the castle you get a complete 360-degree panoramic view of Alicante city and the coastline - the scenery is truly breathtaking.
Historical Background
Santa Barbara Castle dates back to the 9th century during the Moorish occupation. It was later conquered in 1248 by Prince Alfonso of Castile, coincidentally on Saint Barbara’s feast day, which is how the castle got its name. The castle is divided into three main sections: the highest area contains the 11th-13th century old fortress, the middle section features 16th century defensive fortifications, and the lowest section includes 18th century additions. Walking through the castle, you can clearly experience the architectural style differences from each period.

The castle offers free admission, which is excellent. Opening hours vary by season:

There are three ways to reach the castle: elevator, car, or hiking. I chose to hike from the Santa Cruz neighborhood in the old town, which took about 25 minutes. The path is somewhat steep but offers nice views, with traditional white houses along the route. However, going at midday in summer can be quite hot, so I recommend visiting in the evening to avoid the heat and catch the sunset.
Touring Experience & Recommendations
The castle interior is remarkably well-preserved, with areas including the armory, prison, and soldiers’ quarters available for exploration. Some rooms feature exhibition panels explaining the castle’s history and archaeological discoveries. The highlight is definitely the observation platform at the top level, where the view is absolutely unbeatable - you can see the entire Alicante port, Postiguet Beach, and on clear days even distant Tabarca Island.
Allow at least 1.5-2 hours for your visit. There’s a small shop selling water and simple snacks inside, though prices are slightly elevated. For photography enthusiasts, evening light is most flattering, and at sunset the castle takes on a golden hue that’s perfect for photos. Note that there’s minimal shade around the castle, so bring a hat and sunscreen, especially during summer visits.
Santa Barbara Castle is absolutely a must-see attraction in Alicante. The free admission is very generous and offers excellent value. If you have sufficient time in Alicante, I strongly recommend dedicating half a day to thoroughly explore this historic fortress.
