I’ve been living in Alicante for nearly two years now, and I often drive around the surrounding areas on weekends. Today I’d like to share a few places I think are worth visiting, all within one to two hours’ drive.
Altea Old Town
Altea is about 50 kilometers from Alicante, less than an hour’s drive. The most distinctive feature of this town is its abundance of white houses, and climbing up to the hilltop old town, you can see the blue-domed church. The cobblestone streets in the old town are quite steep, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Last time I visited, I had paella at a small restaurant on the hilltop—the taste was decent and prices were somewhat cheaper than downtown Alicante. Weekends tend to be crowded, so I suggest going early.

Nearby Towns Comparison
| Town Name | Distance from Alicante | Features | Recommended Stay Duration |
| Altea | 50km | White old town, beaches | Half day to one day |
| Jávea | 90km | Cliff coastline, diving | One day |
| Villajoyosa | 30km | Chocolate factory, beaches | Half day |
Jávea’s Cliff Coastline
Jávea is a bit further, about 90 kilometers away. The coastline here around Alicante is quite different from other areas, featuring many cliffs and small coves. Granadella Beach is my favorite—the water is exceptionally clear and perfect for snorkeling. However, parking spots are hard to find, so during peak season it’s best to arrive before 9 AM. There’s a small shop by the beach where you can rent snorkeling equipment.
Practical Information
Villajoyosa is an underrated place. This town is famous for chocolate, with the Valor chocolate factory located here at attractions around Alicante, where you can take tours and buy chocolate at good prices. The houses in town are painted in various colors, making it great for photos. The beach is also nice—though not as picturesque as the islands around Alicante as postcards suggest but definitely cleaner than city beaches. It’s just a half-hour drive from Alicante, perfect for an afternoon visit.
Overall, these places around Alicante are all quite suitable for weekend relaxation. If you have a car, it’s worth exploring more—each place has its own unique charm. Feel free to ask me any questions, and I’ll do my best to answer.
