After living in Alicante for three years, I’ve finally gotten to know all the shopping spots in this city inside out. Today I’m organizing my experience, hoping it will help newcomers or long-time residents looking to explore new shopping locations.
Traditional Markets and Fresh Produce
Let me start with Mercado Central, the central market, which is my must-visit place for Alicante shopping every week. Located on Alfonso X El Sabio Avenue, it’s best to go in the morning when the vegetables and fruits are freshest. On the second floor, there are several stalls selling ham and cheese at prices much cheaper than supermarkets. Closed on Sundays and holidays, so plan your visit accordingly. Next to the market, there’s also a small fish market. If you’re planning to buy seafood for paella at an Alicante shopping center, the quality there is quite excellent.

Main Shopping Centers Comparison
| Shopping Center | Location | Features | Opening Hours |
| Plaza Mar 2 | Near the beach | Full range of brands, has Zara, H&M | 10:00-22:00 |
| Gran Via | North of the city | Larger, has Carrefour | 09:00-22:00 |
| Panoramis | Near the airport | Newly opened, convenient parking | 10:00-22:00 |
City Center Shopping Streets
Maisonnave Avenue and Explanada are the busiest shopping areas in the city center. Maisonnave has various chain brand stores, with Mango and Massimo Dutti both located on this street. Explanada is more suitable for strolling, with many small shops along the roadside selling handicrafts, souvenirs, and the like. Going to Explanada on summer evenings is particularly pleasant, shopping with the sea breeze, and when tired, you can sit down for a coffee.
El Corte Ingles Department Store
I must mention El Corte Ingles on Maisonnave, which is Spain’s largest department store chain. The basement level is a supermarket with a comprehensive selection of food products and many imported goods. The upper floors have clothing, electronics, home goods, etc. The top floor has a food court and terrace restaurant with great views of the castle and sea. They frequently have discount seasons, and during the rebajas periods in January and July, the prices are really worthwhile.
Specialty Shops and Local Brands
If you’re looking for something different, I recommend exploring around Santa Cruz in the old town. There are some independent designer shops selling handmade leather goods and ceramics. On San Francisco Street, there’s a shop specializing in olive oil and local specialties, perfect for gifts. Also, Benalua Market was recently renovated and has an artisan market on weekends where you can find many interesting items.
Alicante’s shopping options are quite diverse, from budget chains to high-end brands. I used to think there wasn’t much to shop for in Alicante shopping, but after getting familiar with it, I discovered each place has its own characteristics. Feel free to share any shopping locations you’d recommend.
