Alicante Central Market Location and Shopping Guide
I recently moved to Alicante and wanted to find an authentic place to buy fresh ingredients. After asking around, I discovered there’s an amazing central market in the city center. I visited today and thought I’d share some useful information with everyone.
Market Location
Alicante’s Central Market is located on Alfonso El Sabio Avenue in the old town, at Avenida Alfonso X El Sabio, 10. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the train station, or you can take the TRAM and get off at Mercado station for the most convenient access. The building itself dates back to the early 20th century and has quite distinctive architecture—look for the green iron framework structure.

Opening Hours and Best Time to Visit
The market is open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, closed on Sundays and public holidays. I recommend visiting between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM when the selection is at its best and it’s not too crowded. If you’re looking for seafood, the earlier you go, the fresher it is—some stalls start packing up after 1:00 PM.
Here’s a price reference for various products:
| Product Type | Average Price | Notes |
| Fresh Vegetables | €1-3/kg | Seasonal vegetables are cheaper |
| Seafood | €8-25/kg | Best variety on Fridays and Saturdays |
| Meat | €6-15/kg | Can request slicing |
| Fruit | €2-5/kg | Can select ripeness |
| Cheese & Ham | €15-30/kg | Samples available |
Shopping Experience and Tips
The market has over 280 stalls selling everything you can imagine. The seafood section is on your left as you enter, with an impressive variety of shrimp, fish, and shellfish. The butchers are skilled and can prepare meat to your specifications on the spot. The produce section offers better prices than supermarkets with superior quality.
Some practical tips: Bring your own shopping bags to be eco-friendly, as some stalls charge for plastic bags. Browse several stalls to compare prices—the same items can vary in cost between vendors. Chat with the stallholders; they usually offer cooking suggestions and sometimes give small discounts. Cash is preferred, though many stalls accept cards.
Nearby Amenities
There are several nice bars and restaurants next to the market where you can grab a coffee when you need a break. There’s also a small parking lot nearby—if you’re driving, you can park at Parking Alfonso X El Sabio for about €1.50 per hour. The post office is right across from the market, convenient if you need to mail anything.
This central market is definitely worth visiting, whether you’re shopping for daily groceries or soaking up local atmosphere. Compared to chain supermarkets, it has more character and you can find authentic local ingredients. If you have time, I recommend checking out the Alicante Central Market and exploring the nearby old town, which has plenty of interesting shops and attractions.
