Recently, a friend asked me where the main market in Alicante is located. I just visited last weekend, so I’d like to share the specific location and my shopping experience while it’s still fresh.
Market Location Information
The main market in Alicante is officially called Mercado Central de Alicante, located on Alfonso El Sabio Avenue in the city center. The exact address is Avenida Alfonso El Sabio, 10, 03004 Alicante. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the Explanada de España promenade in the old town, very convenient. If you take the TRAM, get off at Mercado station and you’re there.

Opening Hours and Best Shopping Times
The market has fixed opening hours: Monday to Saturday from 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Note that it’s closed on Sundays and public holidays. I personally recommend visiting between 9 AM and 11 AM, when the selection is at its best and it’s not too crowded. If you want to buy seafood at the Alicante Central Market, the earlier you go, the better - the freshness is completely different.
| Product Type | Recommended Stall Area | Price Level |
| Fresh Seafood | East Entrance Area | Medium-High |
| Vegetables & Fruits | Central Hall | Affordable |
| Meat & Sausages | West Area | Medium |
| Cheese & Olives | North Section | Slightly High |
Shopping Experience
This market is the largest in Alicante, with around 200 stalls. The variety is comprehensive - from fresh fish, shrimp, and crab to various Iberian hams, from seasonal fruits and vegetables to artisan cheeses. Basically, you can find all the daily ingredients you need. Prices are slightly cheaper than supermarkets, and the key is that the quality is much better.
I particularly love the stalls selling olives and pickled products - the owners are very friendly and let you sample. Last time I bought a jar of homemade roasted red pepper sauce, absolutely amazing with bread. The only downside is parking isn’t very convenient, so I recommend walking or taking public transport.
Helpful Tips: Remember to bring a shopping bag. Although vendors provide plastic bags, everyone’s promoting environmental protection nowadays. Also, there are a few small bar counters inside the market where you can have tapas and coffee. When you’re tired from shopping, you can sit down and rest - prices are reasonable too. If it’s your first visit, take your time to explore and ask around. The vendors are quite friendly, and you can communicate with simple English or gestures.
