Real Cost of Living in Valencia
I’ve been seeing many people asking about prices in Valencia lately. Having lived in Valencia for nearly two years now, I’d like to share some insights into the actual cost of living here. As Spain’s third-largest city, Valencia is notably more affordable than Madrid or Barcelona, though your actual expenses will depend heavily on your lifestyle choices.
Housing Costs
Rent is definitely your biggest expense. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center typically runs 600-800 euros per month. If you opt for slightly outlying areas like Benimaclet or Algirós, prices drop to 450-600 euros. Sharing is much cheaper - a room usually costs 300-400 euros. Utilities are separate, generally running 50-80 euros monthly. I currently live in the Ruzafa area, paying 650 euros monthly for a one-bedroom apartment that’s well-located and within walking distance of downtown.

Daily Food Expenses
Food costs vary widely. Cooking at home, weekly grocery shopping runs about 40-60 euros - Mercadona and Consum are my go-to supermarkets for reasonable prices and decent quality. Eating out, lunch menus (Menu del día) typically cost 10-15 euros and include starter, main course, dessert, and drink - excellent value. Evening restaurant meals average 20-35 euros per person. Weekend trips to the Central Market for fresh ingredients to make paella cost around 15 euros, enough for 3-4 people.
Here’s a comparison of common food prices I’ve compiled:
| Item | Price (€) | Notes |
| Milk 1L | 0.8-1.2 | Store brands cheaper |
| Bread | 0.5-2.0 | Fresh bakery bread |
| 12 Eggs | 2.0-3.5 | Organic costs more |
| Chicken breast 1kg | 6.0-8.0 | Better deals during sales |
| Tomatoes 1kg | 1.5-2.5 | Seasonal price fluctuation |
| Coffee | 1.2-1.5 | Standing at bar is cheaper |
Transportation
Public transport is very convenient - single metro ticket costs 1.5 euros, monthly pass is 43.7 euros for unlimited metro and bus rides. If driving, current gas prices are around 1.6 euros/liter, with city center parking running 2-3 euros per hour. I usually bike around - Valencia has an excellent bike lane network that’s both economical and eco-friendly. The Valenbisi public bike share annual pass is only 30 euros, with the first 30 minutes free, which covers most needs.
Other Living Expenses
Gym memberships range from 25-50 euros monthly, movie tickets cost 8-10 euros, haircuts run 15-25 euros. My mobile plan with 10GB data plus unlimited calls is 15 euros monthly. Weekend beach trips are completely free - one of Valencia’s biggest advantages. Occasionally catching a football match at Mestalla stadium costs 30-80 euros, with an amazing atmosphere.
Basic monthly living costs for one person in Valencia run approximately 1200-1500 euros, covering rent, food, transport, and basic entertainment. With some frugality, 1000 euros can work well. Of course, if you frequently dine out, travel, or shop for Valencia wine, expenses will be higher. Compared to other major European cities, Valencia offers genuinely excellent value for money, with great climate and high quality of life. Feel free to ask if you’d like to know more specifics!
