Hey everyone! I’ve been busy with application materials lately and took some time to dive into the latest Spanish university rankings. There’s a lot of information out there, and navigating all the different lists can be overwhelming. To help out, I’ve compiled some details on popular public university rankings, including insights on the World Ranking of Complutense University of Madrid. Hopefully, this will be useful for those of you currently choosing a university!
Which Spanish University Rankings Should You Trust?
First things first, there are many different university rankings, both Spanish and international. You have the world-renowned QS World University Rankings, Spain’s El Mundo ranking, and the U-Ranking, which focuses on research and overall performance. Each list has a different focus, so a school’s position in the University of León ranking might differ from its place in the general Madrid university rankings. It’s best to consult multiple lists and remember that they are for reference only—don’t treat them as the absolute truth.

A Quick Look at Top Universities
I’ve focused mainly on universities in the Madrid and Barcelona regions, as they are top choices for most international students. Here’s a table listing some of the perennially top-ranked public universities for an easy comparison:
| University Name | City | Strong Subjects |
| Complutense University of Madrid | Madrid | Linguistics, Journalism, History, Medicine |
| University of Barcelona | Barcelona | Arts, Medicine, Pharmacy, Chemistry |
| Autonomous University of Madrid | Madrid | Law, Economics, Physics, Biology |
| Autonomous University of Barcelona | Barcelona | Translation, Veterinary Science, Sociology, Media Studies |
| Charles III University of Madrid | Madrid | Business, Economics, Law, Engineering |
Don’t Just Look at Rankings When Choosing a School
!
And this is the most important point: rankings aren’t everything! Choosing a university is a highly personal decision. Beyond the overall rankings, you should pay more attention to program rankings, curriculum, location, cost of living, and your personal interests. For example, if you want to study marine sciences, a university in a coastal city would obviously be a better fit. Choosing a city and program you genuinely love is far more important than getting into a highly-ranked school that isn’t right for you. After all, you’ll be living and studying there for the next few years, so being happy is what matters most!
