Last weekend I finally went boating at the City of Arts and Sciences, something I’d been wanting to do but always thought might just be a gimmick. The actual experience turned out to be quite enjoyable, especially on a nice day—there’s something uniquely special about paddling among those futuristic architectural structures.
Boat Rental Information and Prices
The boating area at the City of Arts and Sciences is located near the Opera House, with the rental point on the side closer to the Oceanogràfic. It’s not very conspicuous. We rented a two-person pedal boat for 12 euros for 30 minutes, or 20 euros for 1 hour. Four-person boats are also available at slightly higher prices. Weekends get crowded, so I’d recommend going early in the morning or after 5 PM when the lighting is also better.

Boating Route Experience
The water area isn’t particularly large, but it’s enough to paddle leisurely and admire the surrounding architecture. We chose the 1-hour package, which basically covers all the main areas. The most recommended view is seeing the Opera House and Science Museum from the water—those white skeletal structures look absolutely stunning from water level, completely different from the land perspective.
There’s virtually no current, making it very easy to paddle. My girlfriend, who doesn’t exercise much, had no problems at all. The only thing to watch out for is coordinating turns between two people; otherwise, the boat just spins in place. We had a good laugh about that at the beginning.
Best Visiting Times
| Time Slot | Advantages | Disadvantages |
| 10 AM-12 PM | Fewer people, soft lighting | Can be sunny |
| 3-5 PM | Comfortable temperature | Peak hours |
| 6-8 PM | Beautiful sunset, great photos | Advance booking needed |
We went at 5:30 PM and caught the sunset—the light was truly beautiful. Strongly recommend bringing sunglasses and sunscreen; the water reflection is intense. I didn’t prepare well for sun protection and came back with a sunburned face.
Practical Tips
About Photography: You can bring your phone or camera, but definitely ensure waterproofing. The rental point doesn’t provide waterproof bags, so bring your own. Space on the boat is limited, so bringing too much stuff is inconvenient.
About Attire: Wear comfortable clothes and shoes—no need for special sportswear. But high heels are absolutely not recommended; they’re inconvenient when boarding and the boat rocks at the Valencia City of Arts and Sciences.
If you’re visiting Valencia, besides touring the various pavilions at the City of Arts and Sciences, boating is a worthwhile experience. While not exactly cheap, being able to appreciate these iconic buildings from a different perspective makes it quite valuable. I’d suggest scheduling it after visiting the museums as a relaxing activity.
